The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water, sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters – NORCAP – with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs.

NRC in Greece

NRC started operations on Greece in October 2015 and has since then directly assisted over 90,000 refugees and migrants. We are working together with the Greek authorities, humanitarian actors and volunteers to set up and maintain a dignified and efficient flow of refugees; from the arrival at the beach, via registration and reception facilities, to departure by boat or plane to mainland Greece.

After the implementation of the EU-Turkey deal in March 2016, almost 50,000 refugees have been stranded on mainland Greece, mostly living in formal and informal sites. The majority of these refugees are concentrated around Athens and Thessaloniki. In response to this we expanded our operation and established an office in Thessaloniki in April 2016.

Through our Greece programme we assist displaced people that have arrived, and continue arriving, by sea. On the mainland, where refugees are stranded in camps, we strive to help them live in conditions of dignity.
