Under the overall guidance of the Nutrition Manager, the Nutrition Officer (Micronutrients) is accountable for professional technical contribution to project design, planning, administration, monitoring and evaluation of Micronutrient Nutrition programme/project activities, data analysis and progress reporting, and commitment for enhancement of teamwork and capacity building, in support of achievement of planned objectives of the work plan, aligned with country programme goals and strategy, with emphasis on addressing gender inequalities.

UNICEF has been operating in Zimbabwe since 1982. We are a team of passionate professionals committed to the protection and fulfillment of children's rights. We work closely with the Government of Zimbabwe, with whom we have signed a Basic Cooperation Agreement, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), sister agencies of the United Nations, and the private sector to deliver much-needed assistance to children and women.

The current UNICEF-Government of Zimbabwe Country Programme of Cooperation (2016-2020) aims to support Zimbabwe to sustain and build upon the gains achieved for children during the 2012-2015 Country Programme of Cooperation. The programme focuses on improving the quality of social services, increasing access to services, and helping to build national and sub-national capacities to provide low-cost, high-impact interventions for all children, especially the most vulnerable.

How can you make a difference?

Under the overall guidance of the Nutrition Manager, the Nutrition Officer (Micronutrients) is accountable for professional technical contribution to project design, planning, administration, monitoring and evaluation of Micronutrient Nutrition programme/project activities, data analysis and progress reporting, and commitment for enhancement of teamwork and capacity building, in support of achievement of planned objectives of the work plan, aligned with country programme goals and strategy, with emphasis on addressing gender inequalities.

KEY END-RESULTS

  1. Accurate, complete and up-to-date information made available for effective budget preparation, programme and project design, implementation, management and evaluation, including inputs needed for addressing gender inequalities.
  2. Project efficiency and effectiveness enhanced through effective implementation support.
  3. Progress reports and project work plans timely prepared, and effective technical assistance provided in the identification of required supplies and equipment, and in the drafting of Country Programme Recommendation and other project documentation.
  4. Appropriateness and completeness of financial and supply documentation as well as adherence to established allotments ensured.
  5. Knowledge sharing with donors and media promoted.
  6. Effective communication and networking achieved through partnership and collaboration, that builds shared understanding of strategies to address gender inequalities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES and DUTIES & TASKS 

Within the delegated authority and under the given organizational set-up, the incumbent may be assigned the primarily, shared, or contributory accountabilities for all or part of the following areas of major duties and key end-results.

1. Programme/Project Management

Ensure the availability of accurate, complete and up-to-date information required for effective Micronutrient Nutrition  programme and project design, Nutrition Data of the country, addressing gender inequalities and determinants of gender equality where relevant in implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation. Draft sound Nutrition programme budgets for review by the supervisor.

2. Project Efficiency and Effectiveness

Enhance project efficiency and effectiveness through implementation follow-on, including gender-specific monitoring UNICEF inputs, local conditions and resources, flow of supply and non-supply assistance and Nutrition project status.

 3. Work Plan and Project Documentation

Analyze collected data and information and prepare progress reports using agreed upon gender indicators where needed; assist in draft changes in Nutrition project work plans and assist in identification of required supplies and equipment as well as in the drafting of Country Programme Recommendation and other project documentation, assuring accuracy and consistency with established rules, regulations and plans of action.

4. Project Implementation Information and Data

Ensure the appropriateness of financial, administrative and supply documentation; verify that Nutrition project expenditures are within allotments and that data is consistent with the project information and database (e.g. Vision). Follow up on queries or initiate corrective action on discrepancies.

5. Knowledge Sharing

Compile Micronutrient Nutrition project implementation training and orientation materials to promote knowledge sharing with donors and media.

6. Communication and Networking

  • Ensure the effective communication and networking developed and maintained through partnership and collaboration, with particular emphasis on understanding gender inequalities and on practicing gender mainstreaming where applicable.
  • Collaborate with Operations staff to implement internal controls systems and resolve day-to-day issues or discrepancies in financial or supply management.
  • Team with local Government counterparts to exchange information on Nutrition project implementation and status as well as movement and distribution of supplies.
  • Help coordinate with members of the development community, including NGOs, UN and bilateral agencies in the exchange of information relating to Nutrition sector.

To qualify as a/an [champion or advocate] for every child you will have…

  • A university degree in Public Health, Nutrition or other relevant discipline(s) is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in health and nutrition in developing countries is required.
  • Background/familiarity with emergency is required.
  • Experience in monitoring gender inequalities and in programming interventions that reduce these disparities an asset.
  • Training in gender and in nutrition programmes that promote gender equality an asset.
  • Fluency in English and the local working language of the duty station is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
