UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world.

For every child, an education

For too many girls, the basic human right to education is denied. In countries across the world, poverty, long distances to school, and social norms promoting gender inequality prevent girls from learning.

In response to this troubling reality, the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), a partnership of organizations dedicated to promoting girls’ education and advancing gender equality, was launched in 2000 at the World Education Forum.

UNICEF is proud to be the lead agency for UNGEI and to host the UNGEI Secretariat. Together with UNGEI and other partners, UNICEF is working hard to transcend barriers to girls’ education and contribute to the SDG agenda of equitable, inclusive and quality education for all.
