Organizational Setting


The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.

The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.

Main Purpose

For the implementation of the decommissioning project in  Safeguards Analytical Laboratory (SAL) to provide specific radiation protection assistance and advice to IAEA in radiation control and decommissioning of SAL until it is handed over to Austrian Institute of Technology.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Monitor/provide advice for radiation protection, including radiation protection practices required after IAEA transition is complete (e.g. continuing ventilation system, air sampling, etc.);
  • Carry out workplace monitoring during decommissioning of laboratory installations and equipment;
  • Provide technical advice and support for radiation protection related matters during the  testing of technical and fire alarm systems at the laboratories;
  • Handle radioactive (nuclear, reference and waste) materials and sealed sources in laboratories during the decommissioning of the laboratory;
  • Maintain and calibrate monitoring instruments used in decommissioning and for the duration of the decommissioning project.


Qualifications and Experience

  • A diploma or equivalent certification from a technical institute in radiation protection, physics, chemistry or appropriate to the duty of the task.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the field of radiation measurements and protection.
  • Practical experience working within either an ISO 9000 or ISO 17025 quality system desirable.
  • Solid knowledge of operational radiation protection and good experience in the provision of operational radiation protection in a laboratory environment.



The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of € 180, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.



NOTE\: The incumbent may perform his/her work in areas involving exposure to radioactive materials. Therefore, as an Occupationally Exposed Worker, he/she must be medically cleared by VIC Medical Service and is subject to an appropriate radiation and health monitoring programme, in accordance with the IAEA's Radiation Safety Regulations.
