Background Information - UNOPS

UNOPS supports the successful implementation of its partners’ peacebuilding, humanitarian and development projects around the world. Our mission is to serve people in need by expanding the ability of the United Nations, governments and other partners to manage projects, infrastructure and procurement in a sustainable and efficient manner.

Working in some of the world’s most challenging environments, our vision is to advance sustainable implementation practices, always satisfying or surpassing our partners’ expectations.

With over 7,000 personnel spread across 80 countries, UNOPS offers its partners the logistical, technical and management knowledge they need, wherever they need it.

A flexible structure and global reach means that we can quickly respond to our partners' needs, while offering the benefits of economies of scale.

Stop TB Partnership

UNOPS hosts the Stop Tuberculosis Partnership Secretariat (STBP) as of 1 January 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland. The vision of the Stop TB Partnership is to realize the goal of elimination of Tuberculosis (TB) as a public health problem and, ultimately, to obtain a world free of TB by ensuring that every TB patient has access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; stopping transmission of TB; reducing the inequitable social and economic toll of TB; and developing and implementing new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic tools and strategies. The Stop Partnership is uniquely positioned to support the development and further implementation by partners of the current and future Global Plan, acting as a coordinator and catalyst for the range of partners engaged in the fight against TB.

Founded in 2001, the Stop TB Partnership's mission is to serve every person who is vulnerable to TB and ensure that high-quality treatment is available to all who need it. Our partners include international and technical organizations, government programmes, research and funding agencies, foundations, NGOs, civil society and community groups and the private sector.

Background Information - Job-specific

The numbers speak for themselves.  In 2015 alone:

  • 1.8 million died from tuberculosis (TB);
  • 10.4 million people fell ill with the disease; and
  • An estimated 480,000 developed multidrug resistant-TB (MDR-TB).

All of this, combined with the airborne transmission of the disease, makes TB the leading infectious disease killer (surpassing both HIV and malaria) and a global health security matter.  If we are actually serious about ending TB by 2030, as set forth in the Sustainable Development Goals, substantial innovation is required across the whole spectrum of TB diagnosis, treatment, adherence, and prevention.

Stop TB Partnership (STBP) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). The organization’s day-to-day operations are managed by a Secretariat based in Geneva, Switzerland.  STBP was established by the World Health Assembly in May 2000, following the Ministerial Conference on Tuberculosis and Sustainable Development in Amsterdam, Netherlands.  The organization comprises of over 1500 partners (including civil society, communities and countries affected by tuberculosis (TB), developed and developing country non-governmental organizations, donors, foundations, multilateral agencies, private sector companies, technical agencies, etc.) and 10 working groups uniting and acting together to end TB by 2030.

STBP’s vision is to end tuberculosis (TB) by 2030 by ensuring that every TB patient has access to effective diagnosis, treatment and cure; stopping the transmission of TB; and reducing the inequitable social and economic toll of TB. The organization has three strategic goals, which include:

  1. Advocate, catalyze, and facilitate sustained collaboration and coordination amongst a broad spectrum of key partners, including civil society, communities, and private sector, in order to achieve the targets set forth in the Global Plan to End TB, 2016-2020: The Paradigm Shift and End TB Strategy;
  2. Support the development, replication, and scale-up of innovative approaches to overcome systemic barriers in the fight against TB; and
Facilitate world-wide, equitable access to TB medicines and diagnostics, including new tools, across public and private sectors.
