How can you make a difference?
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Representative, the Deputy Representative supports the Representative in the overall management of the South Sudan Country Office. S/He is responsible for coordinating closely with the different programme sections on all phases of the Country Programme from formulation to delivery of results in accordance with the UNICEF Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework, ethics and integrity.

As the Deputy Representative, you will be responsible for managing a large office with a multi-disciplinary team of more than 30 professional staff in an exceedingly complex and challenging environment.  Your key functional accountabilities include:

1. Country programme planning and development
2. Support to the Representative on managing the country office
3. Monitoring and quality control of programs
4. Representation, alliance building and UN System coordination
5. Innovation, knowledge management and capacity building

To qualify as a champion for every child you will have…

-An advanced University Degree in social sciences, international relations, government and public relations, public or social policy, sociology, social or community development or other related fields, is required.

-Minimum of ten years of professional development experience that combines technical and managerial leadership in development cooperation at the international level, some of which served in a developing countries is required. Relevant professional experience in any UN system agency or organization is an asset.

-Working experience in emergency duty stations is a desirable asset.

-Oral and written proficiency in English is required.  Knowledge of another official UN language or a local language is an asset.

Person Profile:
The post requires strong managerial experience with ability to lead a large multi-disciplinary team.  A track record in delivering results in a complex humanitarian environment, in particular:

  • Capacity to lead and manage a large team of international staff
  • Capacity to develop and ensure a positive work environment with strong team spirit and drive
  • Proven skills to strategise and operate in a sensitive, fragile and high risk environment
  • Sound knowledge of development and humanitarian programmes and ability to manage programmes that provide life-saving assistance through strategies that build community resilience
  • Sound judgement, political savvy and tact to balance programming and advocacy on child rights issues
  • Strong communication, networking and fundraising skills and ability to build and sustain partnerships with key stakeholders, including the UN inter-agency system
