Under the general guidance of the designated manager, the incumbent is expected to manage and lead the international transport unit which aims to provide complex logistics support operations and on-time delivery of UNICEF shipments.

How can you make a difference? (Purpose for the job):

Under the general guidance of the designated manager, the incumbent is expected to manage and lead the international transport unit which aims to provide complex logistics support operations and on-time delivery of UNICEF shipments. 

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Define international transport strategy, policies and procedures and ensure effective integration of air, sea and surface transport operations, including coordination with other organizations in the area;
  2. Provide leadership to review transport processes and bring change and solutions to maximize efficiency
  3. Responsible for all operational transport matters arising globally in accordance with the corporate standards and improving on-time delivery;
  4. Gather market intelligence through research and networking to improve the knowledge basis in UNICEF of the transport field;
  5. Ensure that risk analysis/management of international transport shipments is reviewed and identification of mitigation measures are carried out.
  6. Responsible for insurance related issues covering international transport (air, sea, multimodal, etc) and warehouse insurance globally.
  7. Ensure that accurate and complete reporting and internal control systems are functioning
  8. Supervise staff and ensure that all staff are adequately trained in order to achieve high working standards; Develop comprehensive training programs as required;
  9. Perform any other duties assigned

Education:

A completed Advanced University Degree (Master’s degree) is required in one of the following areas: supply chain / logistics management (preferred), or business administration, engineering, computer science, statistics, economics (preferably transport economics), quality assurance, air transport / surface transport.

*A completed relevant (as per above) first level University degree (Bachelor’s degree) along with 12 years of working experience in the area of global transport and in country logistics may be acceptable in lieu of Master’s degree.

Experience:

At least ten (10) years of experience in the area of logistics, shipping, supply management, supply chain management and supply support to development programmes is required.

Demonstrated capacity to work within the international development environment, managing supply chain and information systems and managing supply chain operations in resource poor environments is required.

Supervisory / managerial experience at senior level is required.

Languages:

Fluency in English is required.

Proficiency in other UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, or Chinese) is an asset.
