The incumbent of this post will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, planning, formulating, executing, monitoring and evaluating social media and digital engagement strategies for UNICEF’s key audiences as well as defining and determining appropriate innovative tools and identifying new technology adapted to local environments. This position will guide the process of developing standards and normative work on emerging issues related to social media. In addition, the incumbent will lead in the strategic planning, general team management and recruitment, project and risk management, contracting, budgeting, and new business development, including leading in areas of internal and external marketing and partnerships.

The Digital Strategy Section within the Division of Communication comprises Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling.

How can you make a difference?

The incumbent of this post will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, planning, formulating, executing, monitoring and evaluating social media and digital engagement strategies for UNICEF’s key audiences as well as defining and determining appropriate innovative tools and identifying new technology adapted to local environments. This position will guide the process of developing standards and normative work on emerging issues related to social media. In addition, the incumbent will lead in the strategic planning, general team management and recruitment, project and risk management, contracting, budgeting, and new business development, including leading in areas of internal and external marketing and partnerships.   

  • Conceptualize, design, plan, formulate, execute, monitor and evaluate social media and digital engagement initiatives for UNICEF’s key audiences.
  • Actively support the formulation, development, management and implementation of UNICEF’s approach and strategies to social/digital media and engagement.
  • Support the Head of Social Media in the process of setting standards and normative work on emerging issues related to social media, civic media and digital engagement.
  • Identify and support the development of innovative projects that use digital media and new technology to engage UNICEF audiences.
  • Work with and advise other sections/offices in the development of joint initiatives that include the use of new technology to enhance UNICEF’s programmatic work.
  • Support the Head of Social Media in maintaining an overview of initiatives across the section, identify synergies, opportunities and duplications or overload.
  • Provide managerial support as needed to the Social Media Team.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, International Relations or related fields.  (Or an undergraduate degree plus at least 2 additional years of demonstrated professional experience in digital communications).
  • A minimum of five of relevant professional experience in communication, digital marketing, broadcast, and/or new media.
  • Strong ability to write and edit external communication materials, ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form.
  • Experienced and current in digital and social media content and audience trends. Prior digital and social media content strategy/management experience working with a global organization, especially working on projects of similar scale, involving multiple users and groups.
  • Ability to shape and coordinate multidimensional digital and social media campaigns from initial strategy to implementation and post-launch optimization.
  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency response context is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.  Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
