International Potato Center POSITITION ANNOUCEMENT

The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic Driver for the CIP office in Nampula. Also, this position will support in some general administrative activities. Location: Nampula & Alto Molócue Mozambique

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research organization with a global mandate to conduct research on potato and sweetpotato and the sustainable management of natural resources. CIP’s vision is to contribute from its areas of expertise to the fulfillment of the Millennium Development Goals, in particular those goals that relate to poverty, hunger and child and maternal mortality. CIP and its partners contribute high-quality science and capacity building to the global effort to reduce poverty, hunger and malnutrition and make sustainable development possible for poor farmers, their families and communities. CIP has its headquarters in Lima, Peru and staff and activities in other locations in Africa, Asia and Latin America. CIP is a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research, a network of 15 research centers mostly located in the developing world and supported by more than 50 donor members. It is the lead Center of the Roots, Tubers and Banana Research Program of the CGIAR.

The Project: The overall goal of VISTA Mozambique is to contribute to improved nutrition, food security and incomes of 100,000 smallholder farming families through increased production and better utilization of the biofortified orange-fleshed sweetpotato (OFSP) varieties, especially by those most at risk of vitamin A deficiency - children under five years of age and pregnant and lactating women. With continued support from USAID / Feed the Future, the project is expanding its current activities to 16 districts in Nampula and Zambezia Provinces for the next 5 years. VISTA is a research and development collaboration between CIP and national and local partners and emphasizes the importance of technical excellence, rigorous evidence base, and capacity development of Mozambican stakeholders.

The Position: The Driver will report to the Administrator and Project Manager. He/ She will assume the following duties and responsibilities:

Duties & Responsibilities:

Vehicle maintenance (80%):

  • Ensure that the vehicles are kept clean and road worthy;
  • Check vehicle condition/requirement and fill-in the Log Book properly;
  • Ensure vehicle use is in compliance with CIP motor vehicle policy;
  • Operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner and always follow road safety standards;
  • Ensure proper maintenance and servicing of vehicles;
  • Provide day-to-day vehicle reports and report to the supervisor any noted defects on time;
  • Report accidents or incidents to the supervisor in a timely manner
  • Meet official personnel at the airport and organize transfers to hotel;
  • Drive office vehicle for transportation of authorized personnel and delivery/collection of cargo and other items;
  • Make field trips in/or out-side the country; 1 Prepare monthly summary of oil consumption and report to supervisor;
  • Ensure that the steps required by the CIP driving policy are taken in case of involvement in an accident;
  • Perform all other related duties.

Office Assistant responsibility (20 %):

  • Support and assist the Admin. Assistant in duties, such as photocopying, providing messenger services and filing and archiving correspondence;
  • Perform all other clerical related duties, upon request.
  • Make distribution of the Program correspondence, material, documents to appropriate persons;

Selection Criteria

  • Technical studies
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • At least 2 years of experience required in similar positions with a safe driving record.
  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of car mechanics and ability to attend to minor repairs and maintenance of the vehicle in case of breakdown will be an advantage.
  • Computer literate and conversant with the MS Office.
  • Ability to adapt to different work situations and work in a team
  • Experience driving 4x4 vehicles over long distances and on rough terrain
  • Willingness to spend considerable time working under field conditions in rural areas

Conditions:

This position is local thus limited to Mozambican nationals and permanent residents. The employment contract will be for a two-year term (with a three-month probation period) with the possibility of renewal, subject to availability of funding. The salary will be very competitive, paid in Meticais, and commensurate with experience.
