Laboratory Technician

Functional Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of Project/Road Engineer and the overall supervision of the Project Manager, the Laboratory Technician is required to perform the following duties and responsibilities for UNOPS implemented projects:

  • Setting up laboratories;
  • Supervising the laboratory work and supervise cleaning of laboratory equipment;
  • Conducting field testing;
  • Conducting in-house laboratory testing;
  • Collects samples from existing ground for evaluation;
  • Collects samples from borrow pits and samples of natural stone, sand and other materials;
  • Maintaining the quality assurance system with respect to sources of material, material testing, tests on completed elements of work, acceptance criteria, keeping in view the specifications for works;
  • Reviewing mix designs of bituminous concrete and cement concrete specified to or proposed by the contractor and suggesting modifications in the mix design;
  • Ensuring that the contractors’/consultants’ personnel carrying out field and laboratory tests are properly trained and carry out tests in accordance with the specified methods;
  • Keeps appropriate records of all test results in hard and/or soft copies as appropriate;
  • Assists the Project Engineer/Road Engineer during the preparation of reports.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Professional certification/diploma in the relevant field is required.

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years of experience required with professional certification/diploma in the relevant field (engineering and construction industry involving materials testing, technical specifications);
  • Previous experience in post-conflict/ developing country context is required;
  • Knowledge of the UN system and familiarity with UNOPS procedures desirable;
  • Experience in carrying out material tests of soils, aggregates, concrete, bitumen and other construction materials desirable;

 Language requirement

  • The candidate must be thoroughly proficient in written and spoken English, Knowledge of Arabic will be added advantage.

This is local position and therefore open to the Nationals of South Sudan and applicants who have a valid residency work permit.
