Background & Rationale

Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) is a global partnership of over 150 country governments, private sector and civil society organizations, external support agencies, research and learning institutions and other development partners working together to catalyse political leadership and action, improve accountability and use scarce resources more effectively. Partners work towards a common vision of sanitation, hygiene and water for all, always and everywhere.

The Secretariat of the SWA global partnership is hosted by UNICEF at its Headquarters in New York. The SWA Secretariat is responsible for supporting the Steering Committee, Executive Chair and Chair, promoting the country-level engagement of partners, and organizing global High-level Meetings of finance and sector ministers.

As the SWA partnership is expanding, with new partners joining and a greater ambition for the partnership to play a lead role in supporting countries to achieve the WASH-related targets of the SDGs, SWA needs to identify new sources of funding. Thus, the Secretariat is seeking a senior professional to support its fundraising efforts.

Purpose

The purpose of this consultancy is to support the fundraising efforts for the Sanitation and Water for All partnership.   

Expected results: (measurable results)

Reporting to the SWA Secretariat Coordinator, the consultant, in close coordination with the SWA Executive Chair and Secretariat, will be responsible for the following: 

1. Develop and support implementation of a SWA Fundraising Strategy, including mapping potential new donors and recommendations on ways to approach them and leverage existing ones;
2. Explore and advise on new funding modalities for SWA, including in-kind contributions and secondments;
3. Create a strong fundraising message that appeals to potential donors;
4. Develop new materials to support SWA’s Fundraising Strategy and review existing ones with the objective to make them more donor-friendly;
5. Support the Executive Chair in contacting donors;
6. Maintain records of donor information for future use, build and maintain relationships with individuals, corporations, foundations, and trusts;
7. Ensure that all legal reporting requirements are satisfied;
8. Evaluate the success of current and new fundraising efforts. 

Duty Station

The consultant will be based remotely.  

Travel might be required to attend SWA meetings.  Travel will be arranged by the SWA Secretariat; including ticket cost, DSA and terminal fees, following UNICEF procedures.  All additional costs are at the expense of the consultant.

 Key competences, technical background, and experience required

• Advanced university degree (Master's) in economics, marketing, communication, commercial management, business administration or related fields is the minimum requirement. Training in fundraising an asset
• A minimum of five to seven years’ previous work experience, relevant to the function in private sector fundraising
• Experience of strategic planning and budgeting and investment decision-making, in particular in the non-profit sector
• Experience working for international non-profit organizations is an asset
• An aptitude for numbers is required for the role
• Can work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
• A strong team player and independent highly motivated staff member with superior communication and negotiation skills with a track record of working at all levels of a major organization (ideally in the UN, non-profit or grant-making sector in liaising and co-operating with senior staff)
• Strong analytical, creative and problem solving skills. Proven negotiating and influencing capacity
• Ability to work under pressure and to manage multiple priorities
• Demonstrated ability to set standards, plan and implement work, and to innovate and communicate ideas effectively
• Demonstrated ability to work in highly complex multicultural international organizations and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organizations
• Up-to-date knowledge of the fundraising landscape. Knowledge of the water, sanitation and hygiene sector is an asset
• Fluency in English required.  Another language (preferably French and /or Spanish) a strong asset. Additional UN languages are desirable.

Remarks

With the exception of the US Citizens, G4 Visa and Green Card holders, should the selected candidate and his/her household members reside in the United States under a different visa, the consultant and his/her household members are required to change their visa status to G4, and the consultant’s household members (spouse) will require an Employment Authorization Card (EAD) to be able to work, even if he/she was authorized to work under the visa held prior to switching to G4.
