Background

The UN Women grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women will provide support to Member States' efforts and priorities in meeting their gender equality goals and for building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Facilities and Administrative Services (FAS) unit ensures the delivery of a cost-effective, client-focused service at a strategic level for all UN Women HQ. This includes overseeing an integrated programme of cleaning and maintenance services, creating a more UN Women sustainable environment, following construction and relocation projects and overall delivery of standard office supplies and conference services.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Administrative and Facilities Specialist, the intern will assist the Facilities and Administrative Services Section with sustainability, emissions monitoring, and "greening".  A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon:

  • Assist with researching and generating new ideas to help reduce UN Women's environmental footprint and reduce energy consumption;
  • Learn how to conduct field surveys and compile data submitted by field offices with respect the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission studies; learn how to develop training programs;
  • Learn how to develop a sustainability roadmap in order to establish goals, deadlines, and mile markers;
  • Learn how to write reports that can be understood and interpreted by both technical and non-technical audiences.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must be enrolled in an advanced university degree, preferably  in environmental studies/sustainability, education, staff development, or international development.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

Condition:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.
