Background

Brief Project Description:           

In January 2017 UNICEF in Morocco started a new cooperation cycle. Morocco was a pilot country for the UNICEF’s global communication and public advocacy strategy. The latter is pursuing three objectives: to be the voice of children, to reach more audiences and to enhance the public engagement in favor of children rights. In the context of Morocco, traditional audiences will remain important and a focus will be made on millennials and middle class. Traditional media will continue to be an important medium to reach different audiences while a high importance will be given to digital communication to build on the national trend of expansion of Internet coverage (56.8% of the population in 2014) with a large majority of users (84%) made up of young people aged 15-19 years) and use of social media as new and influent spaces of communication in order to foster engagement and enhance impact for child rights and support for the Country Programme at all levels.

Organizational Context:

The position will be hosted in UNICEF Morocco Communication section under direct supervision of the Communication Specialist. Interaction will be regularly conducted with different programs sections (health, education, protection, social inclusion, M&E). Partners shall involve: units from different governmental partners, NGOs, media, consultants, general population…

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Communication specialist the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Develop and implement a social media action plan based around UNICEF’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts and other platforms.
  • Generate content for website, social media and other platforms with the aim of finding innovative ways to increase numbers of followers among key audiences
  • Undertake regular analysis of Morocco digital work to strengthen its impact and generate more engagement among key audiences
  • Monitor social media networks for developments affecting UNICEF’s work in Morocco and support the elaboration of appropriate responses.
  • Design, develop and produce a range of infographics and other digital materials to portray UNICEF and partners contribution to the implementation of the cooperation’s programme.
  • Support the communication section in different aspects during the implementation of the communication actions plans both off and on line.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Output:

·         An annual and monthly digital media action plans are set up, implemented and monitored

·         On the web space, UNICEF’s voice is heard, key audiences reached and their engagement enhanced

·         Appropriate infographics and other digital materials are developed

·         Both on and off line communication actions plans in the office are supported during their implementation

·         A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education : University degree in communication, marketing, social Sciences, or technical field related to the work of UNICEF.
  • Work Experience: at least one year of proven significant professional work experience in communication/digital communication/setting up social networks and maintaining them. Knowledge of development context and programmes. Previous experience with a youth organisation/UN agency/communication company is an asset.
  • Demonstrated information-gathering and communications capacity, including ability to identify strong stories and present them in a compelling way, for a range of audiences;
  • Strong command of standard computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others);
  • Ability to develop infographics
  • Photography, photo editing, videography or graphic design experience is an asset;
  • Good writing skills
  • Analytical and good communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Flexibility and willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
  • Taking initiative and result driven

  • Language: Fluency in French and English demanded. Knowledge of Arabic is a strong asset.

Living Conditions:

Morocco is a Middle Income Country with a population of 33 million. Since the last decade, the country has undergone political, institutional and demographic transitions. The country is in security phase I following the increase of the terrorist threat including against the UN. The climate in Rabat and coastal areas is mild with hot summers and wet and rainy short winters. Accommodation (apartments, studios, villas) is available at reasonable charges. Public transportation, including the train system (which has a good safety record) is inexpensive and connects all the major centers in the country. Taxis are in abundance in large cities such as Casablanca and Rabat. These cities boast a variety of diversions, including cinemas, restaurants, and shopping in modern boutiques or in the souk, the open-air market in which vendors sell a wide array of local arts and crafts items. Conditions of Service

A 12 - months contract; monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, equivalent to MAD 9000; settling-in-grant (if applicable); life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return airfares (if applicable); resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.
