OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
To facilitate and enable communication and flow of ideas among Member States of the WHO African Region and provide translation, editing and interpretation support to Regional programme operations.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To lead, manage, coordinate and motivate a team responsible for the editing, translation, revision, typing, printing, distribution, marketing, sales and storage of AFRO publications and documents; Edit, re-edit, write, re-write, translate, publish and disseminate reports of meetings organized by WHO, including Regional Committee meetings; Ensure factual validity of AFRO translations, publications, reports, and other published materials, and their conformity with WHO policies; Select and prepare illustrations for AFRO publications; Manage  the implementation of a programme of training for health journal editors.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
  1. Translate and self-revise from one or two of the three official languages to one a variety of technical and difficult texts in the health, scientific and related administrative and legal fields for the statutory and educational meetings of the Regional Office, as well as for the general conduct of the regional programme. Texts so translated or revised shall be of such quality as not to require further revision.
  2. Clear with technical units language-related queries raised by outside consultants during contract performance.
  3. Provide support for Editing in English in accordance with WHO's editorial rules.
  4. Supervise the activities of the English Translation Section, in particular by guiding and training junior or less experienced translators assigned to the Section; guiding, supervising and revising the work of external or consulting translators; supervising the English team of translators during meetings of the Regional Committee or special assignments, and coordinating the English component of the Unit's Terminology Database.
  5. Serve as the Unit's Focal Point for Terminology and Machine Translation.
  6. Provide simultaneous interpretation from one or two of the three official languages to one during internal meetings of the Regional.
  7. Perform other related duties in his/her area of competence as may be assigned by the Director, GMC.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Essential\: An advanced university degree in modern languages, with specialization in translation.
Desirable\:
Studies in the social or biomedical sciences 
Experience
Essential\: Seven years of progressive experience in translation and/or revision work at the International level, preferably in an intergovernmental or United Nations system organization
Desirable\: Editing, publications, terminology and management experience

Skills

Excellent translation skills, using one or two of the official languages as the source languages. Diligence and ability to work with precision, under stress, and without supervision. Ability to adapt to a multi-cultural setting. Ability to supervise general service staff and coordinate their activities. Ability to use a computer for word processing.

REMUNERATION
WHO offers staff in the Professional Category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at 70,647 US Dollars (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
