OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

WHO Press (WHP) supports WHO's publishing activities through\: publication of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, the provision of publishing advice, support and training; management of the Publishing Policy Coordination Group; marketing and sales; free dissemination; copyright management; multilingualism support; and contracting of external printing services. WHP also manages a network of accredited freelance English-language copy-editors and technical editors and provides guidance on outsourcing of editorial work.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

- Screen submission, read content and correct documents for errors and assist in the development of technical publications.

- Participate in the planning of content in various manuscripts and documents.

- Screen submitted manuscripts for suitability and propose external peer reviewers. Present reviewed papers to editors' meetings and correspond with authors on those papers considered for publication.

- Edit accepted papers in a manner consistent with the WHO style guide, such that text and is technically accurate and approved by corresponding authors.

- Work with writers and authors and suggest technical input when required.

- Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: A first university degree in communication or editing, or a first university degree in public health or medicine or closely related field with a specialization or training in editing.
Desirable\: An advanced university degree (Masters level or above) in Public Health or Medicine or closely related health field with additional specialization or training in editing.

Experience

Essential\: At least 2 years of experience in clinical, research, and/or working in publishing positions in the life sciences. Experience in editing for a scholarly journal in the health field.
Desirable\: Experience of technical editing for the UN or one of its specialized agencies. Experience in editing for an international scholarly journal in the health field.


Skills

Formal training in, and demonstrated knowledge of, epidemiology, biostatistics, communicable and non-communicable diseases, international health and development.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 46,026 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3272 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
