In view of the ever-increasing demand for information and communications materials on UNICEF programmes in Pakistan from the donors, Division of Communication NYHQ, Private Fundraising and Partnership Division in Geneva, national and international media, National Committees and programme sections within PCO, Advocacy and Communication needs to hire a short-term consultant to support the Section with the present surge of public information work.

Purpose of the Assignment

In view of the ever-increasing demand for information and communications materials on UNICEF programmes in Pakistan from the donors, Division of Communication NYHQ, Private Fundraising and Partnership Division in Geneva, national and international media, National Committees and programme sections within PCO, Advocacy and Communication needs to hire a short-term consultant to support the Section with the present surge of public information work.

To make a difference, you will be accountable for the following tasks and deliverables:

  1. The consultant, under guidance from the Chief, Advocacy and Communication Section, will conduct research, interview beneficiaries and counterparts and produce human interest stories as per the demand by the programme sections for donor reports, UNICEF global and PCO websites and other public information documents.
  2. The consultant will undertake missions to field locations for production of human interest stories and manage the video team and photographer during these missions. He/she will maintain a log of these stories and related video b-rolls and high resolution images. He/she will follow up with programme sections, field offices and DOC about the preproduction and post production processes.   

  3. In consultation with the Chief, Advocacy and Communication, the consultant will also support production of short films and documentaries for public awareness purposes as well as to meet the donor demand for short films depicting benefits for women and children because of their donations to UNICEF.

  4. The consultant will coordinate and assist production of video documentary films for public awareness purposes as well as those requested by the donors.

  5. The consultant will also proof read and edit existing drafts and finalise them in accordance with UNICEF’s new branding and styling guidelines.

  6. In the event of a major emergency, the consultant may be asked to support emergency related activities of the Advocacy and Communication Section.

Expected Deliverable

  1. Twelve human interest stories as per UNICEF standards duly approved by the concerned Section Chief.
  2. Final drafts of six public information documents – including press releases – editing, proof reading and writing tasks as assigned by the Chief of Section during the consultancy.

  3. Produce three blogs for social media on key priority programme areas from Pakistani perspective.

  4. Facilitate filming, post production and deliver final version of the UNICEF documentary on EU funding for the BBEP duly approved by the Delegation of the EU

  5. Facilitate and provide support to the organisation of two workshops, one in Balochistan, one in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Estimated Duration of Contract:

6 Months, starting November 2017

Anticipated Travel Itinerary             

The consultant will be required to travel locally within Pakistan.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

Applicants are requested to submit a financial quotation indicating monthly fee.

Education

  • Advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations; A first university degree with an additional two years of experience can be considered in lieu of advanced university degree.

Experience

  • At least four years of professional work experience in communication, print and/or broadcast media or interactive digital media.
  • Previous UNICEF, UN and/or humanitarian experience in a communications role is highly desirable.
  • Technical competence in producing written and visual content for various media formats – eg. print, audio, video, and/or still photography, etc.

Language Proficiency

  • Excellent English ability; must be able to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form. Fluency in Urdu is also required (another Pakistani language would be an asset).

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong skills in writing and producing feature articles/stories for traditional and electronic media.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, internet, and various office applications.
  • Possesses strong inter-personal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a multicultural team.
