Position Background

Through the Institution and Civil Society Development Department, ICMP implements its mandate of assisting governments and state institutions to build rule-of-law institutions that successfully and impartially search for and identify missing persons in a manner that enables families of the missing to assert their rights.  To learn more about ICMP click here.

The selected Intern will gain expertise in research, planning, management and strategic planning skills, and will have the opportunity of contributing directly to the global efforts to account for missing persons around the world.  This is a three-month unpaid internship, working hours are from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Reporting directly to the Head of the Deaprtment, the Intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Conducting desk research, including comparative research on legal and institution developments at the national levels concerning missing persons.
  • Monitoring global policy developments, including at UN and inter-regional bodies and mechanisms.
  • Undertaking stakeholder mapping exercises in support of ICMP’s program development, and contributing to maintaining stakeholders’ databases.
  • Supporting the preparation of training and technical assistance tools.
  • Assisting in drafting reports and preparing presentations on assigned topics.
  • Liaising with ICMP partners, including national authorities and civil society organizations.
  • Contributing to the design and implementation of the initial phases of the Global Forum on Missing Persons.
  • Supporting logistical preparations for presentations and events.
  • Undertaking general project management and administration tasks.
  • Any other relevant duties.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • University degree or close to completion in the areas of political science, human rights, law, international relations or related field
  • Post-graduate studies is an asset
  • Proven strong record of academic performance
  • Practical experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: open source monitoring; comparative legislative research, especially in criminal law and procedure, and human rights
  • Demonstrated knowledge of politics, human rights, legislation, civil society in ICMP country and thematic programs
  • Excellent drafting skills in English
  • Analytical and research skills
  • Attention to detail, a proactive approach, and good judgment
  • Commitment towards the rule of law
  • Monitoring of multilateral and international human rights mechanisms and bodies
  • Information research and analysis
  • Academic research
  • Experience organizing and managing events is an asset

Additional requirements:

  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English (native fluency would be an asset).
  • Advance knowledge of written and spoken Spanish or Arabic.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven ability to interact positively with colleagues regardless of culture, nationality or gender.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

  • Working hours
    As agreed with their supervisors. Interns must provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances that prevent them from observing these working hours.
  • Visa and travel
    Interns are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. If required, ICMP may request the host state to assist a selected intern in obtaining visas. Costs and arrangements for travel, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
  • Insurance
    Interns are responsible for providing proof of valid medical insurance coverage prior to the start of the internship placement.
  • Conduct & Confidentiality
    Interns are required to sign and abide by the ICMP Code of Ethical Conduct. ICMP has the authority to remove any intern from a placement due to unsatisfactory performance or conduct.
  • Privileges and immunities
    In The Hague – unless Dutch nationals or otherwise entitled to residency in the Netherlands – interns will be registered with the Dutch MFA for a maximum period of six months and are obligated to leave the Netherlands within fifteen (15) days at the end of their internship.
