Background

Background: UNDP internship programme offers an outstanding graduate-level students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to the development issues and a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of OCHA. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various professional aspects. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.

Objective of the internship: is to provide students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds exposure to development issues and a first-hand impression of the day-to-day working environment of OCHA, while contributing creatively to the work of the office.

Organizational Context 

The provision of humanitarian aid requires concerted action by numerous actors. Around the world, the United Nations is mandated to play a central role in inter-agency coordination of humanitarian assistance. In this context, following the outbreak of the crisis, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) established a presence in Ukraine in 2014. By September 2015, OCHA already had staff in Kyiv and in field offices in Donetsk, Kramatorsk, Kyiv, Luhansk, Mariupol and Sievierodonetsk.

The mission of the UN OCHA is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors.

OCHA’s Ukraine main communication channels are regular reporting products and social media presence (mainly Facebook), contribution to global OCHA media channels, and other printed products, which ensure media visibility both in Ukraine and on the international scene. Campaigns are organized on an ad-hoc basis.

OCHA Ukraine Reporting/PI Unit works on reporting and strategic communication to provide timely information about humanitarian situation.  

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

Under the overall guidance of the OCHA National Reports Officer, the Intern contributes to the tasks of the Reporting/PI Unit based on a workplan to be agreed with the National Reports Officer at the beginning of the assignment.

Tasks may include, for example, 

  • Social media management, including promotion of social media page, translating Facebook posts to Ukrainian/Russian;
  • Support in translation, editing texts in Ukrainian/Russian;
  • Provide support in updating various databases, photo archives;
  • Media monitoring, issuance of daily media updates and updating media contacts;
  • Administrative support (meetings, events);
  • Support in preparing media materials, including conducting research and fact checking, performing photo/video editing.

Impact of Results

  • The intern will produce concrete deliverables within the scope of OCHA Ukraine Reporting/PI Unit.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks independently with possible time constraints and work load;
  • Has the willingness to approach development tasks with a creative attitude;
  • Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude, pro-activity;
  • Has a calm diplomatic manner, and can be good-humored even under pressure.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled student in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in Communications, Public Relations, Management, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Science, International Relations or related field; or
  • Enrolled student in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in Communications, Public Relations, Social Science, International Relations, Management, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field; or
  • Graduate student within one-year of graduation of any of the above.

Experience:

  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Complete fluency in Microsoft Word, (MS Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) is required.
  • Photo and video editing skills are an asset; 
  • Experience with social media platforms is an asset;
  • Language Requirements: High proficiency in written and spoken English and Ukrainian is required;
  • Russian and other language skills are an asset.
