Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Expert, Zambia

We are currently seeking a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Expert for an anticipated USAID-funded Scaling Up Nutrition – Technical Assistance (SUN TA) project based in Zambia. SUN TA will focus on reducing stunting by integrating agriculture, nutrition, and water and sanitation. Interventions will increase access and availability of safe, diverse, nutritious food, adoption of better child feeding and women’s diets, water and hygiene practices to improve food safety and utilization, and access to clean water and a healthier, cleaner environment. The project will also prioritize cross cutting issues pertaining to improving intra-household joint decision making and women’s control over resources, as well as building capacity of local government and their stakeholders to ensure coordination, accountability, and learning, following the Scaling Up Nutrition model.

The WASH Expert directly report to the DCOP in activity implementation and management. The WASH Expert will oversee the implementation of WASH activities and be responsible for sectoral leadership in WASH.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a key member of the technical leadership team in guiding the effective activity implementation and achievement of WASH objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership, oversight and capacity development in increased access to safe drinking water for beneficiaries.
  • Lead the improvement of sanitation in communities and schools.
  • Lead the development of strategies and interventions that reduce exposure to causes of disease and environmental enteropathy.
  • Oversee the improvement of service delivery from an existing basic drinking or safely managed water service.
  • Inform the proper dissemination of hygiene and sanitation messages to the target beneficiaries.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in in Civil Engineering, Water Supply and Sanitation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Management, Public Health or qualifications that demonstrate relevance to WASH project management.
  • Minimum of 8 years of demonstrated progressive experience with increasing responsibility focused on community led behavior change and infrastructure development/maintenance approaches such as Community Led Total Sanitation, Decentralized Waste Management Systems, Rural Water Self Supply, Water Kiosk management, public health concepts, etc. in rural and peri urban areas reducing health risks at household and community levels for affected populations in the areas of WASH.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience in providing technical expertise to host government institutions and private sector partners from national to sub-district levels for the areas of WASH service provision.
  • Proven knowledge of WASH systems in Zambia.
  • Fluency in English required
