Org. Setting and Reporting

The Department of Public Information/News and Media Division/Coverage and Media Services Branch/News Monitoring Unit internships are for three (3) months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of NMU Chief and/or senior NMU colleagues.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of NMU Chief and/or senior NMU colleagues, the Intern will assist with online media monitoring, using commercial and open source news aggregators and monitoring tools, as well as primary media sources. Daily tasks will include searching, gathering, summarising and analysing media stories for inclusion in NMU’s daily products. Other tasks may include assisting in press reviews drafting and social media monitoring/listening.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, Department of Public Information, the following conditions must be met:

Applicants must be enrolled in the final year of a first university degree programme or a graduate degree programme in journalism, communication, media studies, political science, international relations, or related area. If selected, they must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

They also must be computer literate in standard word processing and spreadsheets software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel or similar.

Applicants are expected to have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme. However, applicants are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their UN professional history profile (PHP).

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English and in Arabic and/or Chinese is required. Knowledge of another UN official language (French, Russian and/or Spanish) is desirable.
