OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The AMR Secretariat is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Global Action Plan on AMR

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

- Coordinate and ensure the implementation of the global action plan on AMR through the development and consolidation of Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS), which will contribute to a better knowledge of the Antimicrobial Resistance Secretariat (AMR) situation in all countries.

- Develop innovative standards and methods for data collection on AMR in human infections caused by selected bacterial pathogens, in harmonized monitoring of the extent of AMR globally.

- Develop standards and methods for data collection on AMR in hospital-acquired infections caused by highly resistant pathogens to inform infection prevention and control strategies.

- Guide the development of new innovative tools and database to support AMR surveillance in low resource settings.

- Lead the analysis of global data and summary information on AMR trends which will ensure the provision of regular WHO AMR report.

- Lead the development and implementation of a framework for rapid detection and reporting of new types of bacterial AMR to inform timely control measures.

- Provide technical advice and guidance to the Regional Office for Europe in the efforts to expand the surveillance methodology used by countries participating in the Central Asian and Eastern European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance (CAESAR) network to GLASS methodology, including through country visits as requested.

- Facilitate the GLASS Collaborative Platform to facilitate coordination across international stakeholders and alignment of efforts.

- Build partnerships with Regional Offices and external partners such as international AMR surveillance networks, supranational technical agencies (e.g., ECDC), WHO collaborating Centers, to ensure the development of agreed AMR surveillance strategies and concerted efforts.

- Assume additional responsibilities as requested by Senior Management including that of leading the team.

- Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: Medical degree and advanced university degrees in epidemiology.
Desirable\: An advanced university degree in microbiology.

Experience

Essential\:

- At least 7 years of experience in the field of infectious diseases, and in particular human bacterial infections.

- Experience with development of standards and tools to support implementation of global surveillance systems.

- Experience with support to countries to develop national surveillance systems and strategies to combat AMR.

- Experience with development of guidance to improve international infection and control preparedness in health care.

- Demonstrated experience in coordinating international networks.
Desirable\:

- Demonstrated experience in data analysis.

- Experience with national infection prevention and control programs in developing countries.

- Experience with medical education and training of health care workers.

- Experience in WHO with an understanding of its mandate, goals and procedures, or experience in the UN System.

Skills

- Sound knowledge of the collection, assessment and analysis of scientific evidence in programmes and policies.

- Sound knowledge of infection prevention and control strategies inform the design of surveillance of multi-resistant pathogens in hospitals.

- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 70,647 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5022 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
