Assists in planning, implementing, and monitoring of communication (engagement and reach) and visibility activities both in Brussels and in the field, through various forms of media and in line with the UNICEF brand and the EU contractual requirements to ensure the visibility of the UNICEF-EU partnership to a wide range of audience.  

How can you make a difference?

1.  Communication materials

Together with HQ, ROs and COs, ensure that the production of communication products and materials related to the EU-UNICEF partnership is timely executed and followed up according to contractual requirements agreed upon with the EU.

Duties & Tasks      

  • Follow up with HQ, ROs and COs (as relevant) to ensure that they are aware of their contractual requirements in terms of communication and visibility;
  • Provide them with guidelines and build their capacity on the development and production of these materials in line with the UNICEF and EU brands guidelines;
  • Review and provide comments on the quality of the materials in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with EU counterparts to ensure that they are consulted as required in the development of materials, and build partnership with them;
  • Produce advocacy and communication materials (for print, visual and digital materials) that meet the UNICEF and EU standards. Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
  • Recommend appropriate information and communication materials for use in media, and other advocacy and communication activities; recommend the appropriateness, quality and dissemination of printed and audio-visual materials.
  • Recommend established contacts, networks, resources and processes to support communication activities.

2.  Events and campaigns

Contribute to global, PPD and Brussels’ Office efforts in developing and implementing campaigns and events in close partnership with the EU and various parts of the organisations.

Duties & Tasks

  • In close collaboration with global focal points for cause framework campaigns and DOC, help translate relevant global signature moments, campaigns and events into activities in Brussels with EU counterparts, partners and the media.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of joint communication campaigns with the EU. This tasks includes preparing/tailoring campaign materials, disseminating them appropriately according to the audience using different channels (traditional and digital media, social media, exhibitions etc.) and assisting in the planning, logistics and administrative arrangements.
  • Coordinate closely with relevant HQ Divisions, ROs and COs globally, especially COs and Natcoms from EU member states for the dissemination of the campaign within the EU member states and countries where the campaign is implemented.
  • Support the engagement of adolescents and young people from programme countries and EU members states with the EU through relevant ROs, COs and Natcoms to bring their voices to the EU and support the advocacy of UNICEF.

3.  Media relations 

Effective and timely professional assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, web etc. – in Brussels, to communicate the story of UNICEF's cooperation to a wider audience.

Duties & Tasks

  • Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with local mass media.
  • Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials in all media formats, as appropriate.
  • Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.

4.  Monitoring and evaluation

Regular monitoring and evaluation activities are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of Brussels Office communication efforts. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.

Duties & Tasks

  • Monitor and evaluate the appropriate and timely dissemination of advocacy and communication materials to target audiences, and participate in the evaluation of their impact. Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of coverage (clippings, coverage etc.)
  • Assist in providing feedback to DOC on the use and appropriateness of global communication materials such as publications, images and multimedia products.
  • Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient advocacy.
  • Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor.

To qualify as an advocate for every child, you will have…

  • A university degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years of practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
  • International and national work experience (for IP).
  • Experience in working with the European Institutions and familiarity with the EU development and humanitarian policies and priorities would be an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required, with knowledge of another UN language (especially French) considered an asset.
