Role overview

Telling stories is a vital part of VSO's work. It puts people right at the heart of our organisation.

As Editorial Manager you'll oversee VSO's photographic, video and written content, ensuring that it's of the highest professional and ethical quality. It will communicate the powerful contribution that volunteers make and the stories of people around the world. You'll ensure published content is suitable for the planned audience, and that editorial standards are met.

The role involves research, planning and delivering storygathering shoots, including briefing freelancers, writing contracts and directing, pre- during and post-production. International travel is expected, as well as supporting international media relations and supporting in-country colleagues to conduct their own storygathering appropriately. You'll also promote the role of storytelling and the fundamental need for ethics and consent.

Excellent research, writing and interviewing skills are essential. Knowledge of archiving content is desireable. All outputs must meet fundraising, recruitment, media and programmatic strategic objectives, to a tight budget.

The role sits in the Marketing team and manages a team of Content Producers, a Copywriter and a network of freelancers.

Skills, qualifications and experience

You will be a creative and practical minded self-started.

You will be a champion of Plain English, an innovative storyteller and you'll understand audiences. You will have experience of delivering storygathering trips in developing countries, interviewing vulnerable contributors and directing multimedia freelancers. You will have commissioned and produced packages of audiovisual and photographic content for different channels.

You will have experience with working with international colleagues and understand how communications can be leveraged in international development. You will understand media, fundraising and recruitment teams and the importance of brand. You will have delivered training on communications work. You will be scrupulous about working to deadline.

You will be a skilled writer and project manager, understanding how to balance priorities and defend editorial decision-making.
