What we do

 The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law.  We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations

Role description

The Food Quality Expert is responsible for implementing the Food Quality Management for ICRC procurement.

He (or she) supports buyers for labs and suppliers’ audits, items specification, QC findings validation and control of nonconforming products.

He (or she) monitors the performance of the food procurement processes (quality dashboards).

Main responsibilities:

Functionnal responsibilities:

  • Reviews current work practices amongst buyers, suppliers, laboratories and delegations and propose improvements to ensure Food Quality Management in the ICRC;
  • Provides technical assistance on food quality related topics (at delegations, Logistics Support Centres and head quarter levels), interprets food testing report results and their alignments with ICRC’s specifications (and local regulations), and proposes solutions in case of identification of risks or non-conformities (corrective actions: rejection, sorting, etc.);
  • Conducts food testing labs and food suppliers’ audits and ensures proper evaluation, coaching and corrective action follow; Monitors laboratories and suppliers performance through Quality Control and audit reports. Ensures proper communication of findings (quality dashboards);
  • Identifies risks associated to food’s quality & safety and proposes solutions to control them (risk based thinking approach, identification of roots causes and implementation of corrective and preventive actions);
  • Implements operational systems and methods of food’s QC along the supply chain (REDBOX (control bench), selection of suppliers, best practices).
  • Customizes technical responses regarding item specifications and their application in contractual terms (implementation and monitoring of Acceptance Quality Level approach);

People management responsibilities:

  • Responsible for QC training of Quality Controllers, Quality Officers and people involved in Food Quality Management processes.
  • Conducts regularly visits to delegations buying food for their programs.

Other:

  • You will be in close contact with : QC Controllers and QC Officers, QC Technician and QC Technician assistant, Quality Managers, Buyers, Warehouse managers, Logisticians, Nutritionists.

Desired profile and skills

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in food quality related topics, food production management and commodities trade.
  • Experience in humanitarian contexts and in supplier and labs assessments.
  • Experience as Food Commodities Expert , Food processing Technician(industry) or Food Lab Technician
  • Fluent in English and French
  • Confidence of Food parameters. Physical, chemical and microbiological
  • Administrative and organisational skills.
  • Rigorous, precise and honest
  • Able to develop effective food analysis methods and tools on the field
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to read food product specifications.
  • Experience in performing Quality Social and Environmental assessments/audits of food labs and factories.

Our operational and field constraints

  • In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to the departure in the field
  • Candidates must possess a driving license (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents) for the first two missions (minimum 12 months each) or total of 24 months
