Consultant : Operational Information Management & Performance Reports Officer - Kinshasa, DRC

Washington D.C. (United States of America) | Kinshasa

ABOUT WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) presents one of the largest, most complex humanitarian crises in the world. During the last decade over 5.4 million people have died from violence in the East because of conflict, disease and malnutrition.

Large displacement movements due to recurrent regional conflicts have been occurring in DRC for the past 10-15 years. As a result of the recent crises in the Tanganyika province and the Kasais region, OCHA estimates that there are over 3.8 million Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in DRC, making it the country with the highest number of IDPs in Africa.

The latest Integrated Food Security and Humanitarian Phase Classification (IPC, June 2017) identified some 7.7 million people in acute food security and livelihood crisis.

The escalation of the conflict in the greater Kasai region of DRC has caused widespread displacement, loss of livelihoods, and the destruction of household assets, agricultural land and community infrastructure. An estimated 2.4m people have been directly affected by the conflict, with an estimated 1.4m people internally displaced and 33,000 people recorded to have fled to neighbouring Angola, as refugees. According to the June 2017 IPC analysis, an estimated 2.8 million in the Kasai region are categorized as being in IPC Phase 3 and 4. Emergency Food Security Assessment (EFSA) results from a September 2017 indicate that an estimated 3.2m people are food insecure in the greater Kasai region

In the last few years, because of on-going crisis in neighboring Central African Republic, South Sudan and Burundi, there has been a regular influx of refugees in the northern and Eastern parts of the DRC exacerbating the fragility of those impoverished communities.

National capacity to respond to the multiple crises in the country is limited and the deep-rooted and widespread poverty and lack of infrastructure are all compounding factors of food insecurity in DRC.
