The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. We are seeking to fill a Consultancy position of Sustainable Building Specialist, based in our Headquarters in Rome, Italy, with significant travel to field locations.

Under the general supervision and guidance of the Deputy Chief Engineer, the Sustainable Building Specialist Consultant will be responsible for the development of a low technology, high performance, modular solution for WFP field office and field accommodation infrastructure that can be installed in off-grid and complex environments with the use of limited resources. He/she will have the following key duties:

  • Oversee the audit of a number of WFP office and accommodation field sites, as well as providing individual plausibility reports for each of the facilities, in collaboration with WFP external partners;
  • Conduct a full life-cycle analysis of an existing compound to use as a baseline for future studies;
  • Guide and develop strategy to incorporate the recommended interventions into the design of identified facilities;
  • Design, cost and develop an integrated low energy modular solution for an office and accommodation site based on maximised efficiencies, low energy footprint, ease of construction, low ongoing maintenance and the provision of off grid services.
  • Identify and measure performance indicators and compare with the measured baseline.

Deliverables

The solution will focus on the use of recycled and low-impact building materials, integration of waste management solutions, building layouts and placement to maximize the reduction in energy consumption, and the production of energy using renewable sources. WFP aims to transition to green constructions which are clean, sustainable buildings, designed with natural materials, relying on low and renewable energy supplies that are easy to maintain and available at a reasonable cost.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Education:

  • A primary university degree in Engineering or Architecture is required;
  • An advanced university degree related to building technologies or renewable energy is desirable.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years’ relevant post-graduate industry experience;
  • At least 5 years directly related experience in the field of sustainable building projects;
  • Working in an international context for developing appropriate strategies for infrastructure in environments with limited resources is required.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design of sustainable building solutions;
  • Ability to develop and recommend design concepts and details, using building information models, analysis, and other visualization and documentation tools;
  • Strong and current knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, material application, and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness;
  • Strong and current knowledge in building materials and their performance in harsh environmental conditions;
  • Strong and current knowledge of sustainability, integrated design, and LEED guidelines.
  • Experienced in the development of building management plans post construction;
  • Ability to lead in the preparation of construction drawings, evaluating compliance with building codes;
  • Proven ability to take responsibility for implementing established standards and conventions for high quality projects and documents.

Competencies:

  • Proficiency with Revit and Adobe Creative Suite is required;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, or common digital rendering or predictive analytics programs, Newforma or similar data management software is preferred**;**
  • Effective and proven strong interpersonal skills, with experience in leading collaborative professional partnerships.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English;
  • Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is desirable.
