The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs

Background

NRC is launching a three years humanitarian mediation initiative in Central African Republic, DR Congo and Mali with the financial support of SIDA.

The position is located within the Regional Office for West and Central Africa in NRC. The position is devoted 100% to field support and deployments in country offices with pre and post deployments briefings in Dakar, Senegal. It covers all three countries, Mali, CAR, and DR Congo.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

The purpose of the Regional Roving Humanitarian Mediation Adviser is to provide technical support and train, mentor and coach the humanitarian mediation teams in the three countries. He/she will also be responsible for the project management of the SIDA grant at the regional level and for the global learning initiative that will seek to measure the effect of humanitarian mediation on the protection of civilians in conflict contexts. 

  • Compliance and adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures

  • Provide strategic advice and technical support to the Country Offices on humanitarian mediation activities

  • Accountable for the capacity development along the technical reporting lines (to Humanitarian Mediation PMs in the COs) including the mentoring and development of key staff in the country offices. Contribute to the recruitment and induction of appropriately qualified humanitarian mediation staff.

  • Training, field coaching, mentoring and companionship of the program staff in the three countries

     

    Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant professional experience within the humanitarian field – minimum 3 in a highly insecure context

  • Significant experience from participating/leading humanitarian mediation efforts

  • Experience from developing and conducting trainings

  • Experience from providing coaching and mentoring

  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities

  • Able to represent the organisation at a strategic level

  • Fluency in English and French, both written and verbal.
