Introduction

Laboratory technician for the CERN-MEDICIS Facility in the Engineering Department (EN), Sources, Targets and Interactions Group (STI), Radioactive Beams Sources (RBS) Section.

As a Laboratory Technician you will join:

  • The Engineering Department which provides CERN with the Engineering Competences, Infrastructure Systems and Technical Coordination required for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling phases of the CERN accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.
  • The Sources, Targets & Interactions Group (STI) which is in charge of the design, construction, and operation of the components of the CERN Accelerators (LHC, PS, SPS). The Group hereby closely interacts with the beams (Beam Intercepting Devices) and Experimental facilities like ISOLDE (Isotope Separation On-Line), n-TOF (Neutron Time of Flight experiment), CTF3, and the PS and SPS Experimental Areas.
  • The RBS Section, that is responsible for the fabrication of target units for the production of radioactive ion beams for the ISOLDE Facility.

This role encompasses target material and ion source developments for the production of new beams and the development of the ISOLDE target stations and dedicated off-line equipment. The Section also maintains an expertise in the operation of the separators and other secondary beam line equipment. The ISOLDE facility provides a large variety of radioactive ion beams for the nuclear physics program at CERN. To provide a safe working environment for the handling of open radioactive source, the facility is equipped with a dedicated Class A type laboratory. A recent addition to the facility is the CERN-MEDICIS laboratory that includes an off-line mass spectrometer for the production of radioactive isotopes for medical applications. The newly appointed laboratory technician will be required to operate the MEDICIS facility providing high purity samples of radio-isotopes for research centers within the MEDICIS Collaboration.

Functions

As Laboratory Technician in the RBS Section, you will:

  • Operate the CERN-MEDICIS mass spectrometer including maintenance and machine developments.
  • Coordinate all activities in the radio-chemistry laboratories.
  • Liaise with technicians in charge of the target production, target unit handling and engineers in charge of the infrastructures; participate to the mechanical design of new targets and to integration studies.
  • Acquire knowledge of work in radioactive environment and then design work procedures in close collaboration with the CERN radiation protection service.
  • Provide technical support for external users.
  • Develop methods of implantation and purification.
  • Perform radiochemical operation as required.

Qualification required

Higher technical diploma in the field of chemistry and/or electromechanic, or equivalent.
