UNICEF works in 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child. UNICEF has spent 70 years working to improve the lives of children and their families. Defending children's rights throughout their lives requires a global presence, aiming to produce results and understand their effects. UNICEF believes all children have a right to survive, thrive and fulfill their potential – to the benefit of a better world.

For every child, Education

In its new multi-country programme (2018-2022) UNICEF Pacific aims to ensure more pre-primary and school-aged children, particularly the most vulnerable, are in school and learning.

UNICEF collaborates with implementing partners including ministries of education, international and national NGOs to establish child-friendly education systems wherein the teaching-learning will be more effective in an enabling environment that is rights-based and inclusive, gender-sensitive, community-engaged, safe and protective, and health promoting. Essential elements that will lead to effective learning outcomes.  UNICEF promotes collaboration and leverage resources with Ministries of Education and other line Ministries responsible for cross-cutting issues at national and sub-national levels.

UNICEF also works to close equity gaps and ensure that communities, parents and children themselves understand the importance of education and can advocate for the rights of their children. The education programme in all targeted countries focuses on removing barriers to parental involvement, especially for children with disabilities, improve awareness on education alternatives and provide avenues for parents to support the learning and development of children.

UNICEF is also building on its current efforts in education to incorporate the school-based disaster risk reduction and resiliency (DRR) in targeted schools.  The programme will seek to 1) establish a disaster response mechanism to provide quality protection at school level for all children especially those with disabilities; 2) meet the special needs of children during disasters and ensure that their psychosocial needs are managed; 3) ensure continuity of children’s education when disasters occur.
