Role Description

The CERN-Japan Fellowship programme is for young researchers of Japanese nationality or permanent residence status of Japan who want to work primarily in LHC data analysis and physics studies. Applicants wishing to work on related subjects such as LHC phenomenology or accelerator physics could also be considered. In view of Japan's commitment to the ATLAS experiment, candidates are asked at the time of application if they intend to work with the ATLAS collaboration. The appointments can be renewed for a total of up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance.

Information in Japanese language: For a better understanding of the programme, a webpage written in Japanese is available at http://atlas.kek.jp/sub/CERNJapanFellowship

Eligibility conditions

  • Nationality: Applicants should be nationals or permanent residents of Japan.
  • You have a doctorate for applicants in experimental or phenomenological physics and/or accelerator science. Candidates who are currently preparing a PhD are eligible to apply. However, they are expected to have obtained their PhD by the time they take up their appointment at CERN.
  • You have no more than 10 years relevant experience after your Masters diploma (or equivalent) at the time of the Selection Committee meeting.

Documents required

  • a completed electronic application form;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a list of publications if relevant (for collaborations, please indicate simply the number of publications and only provide details of the most important ones);
  • a photocopy of your last(highest) qualification;
  • a short description of your research interests, including a statement whether you intend to work with the ATLAS collaboration;
  • three letters of recommendation to give as broad as possible overview of your academic and/or professional achievements. The application and ALL supporting documents should reach CERN (or be submitted using the e-recruitment system) by 31 January 2018. Please note: Once you have submitted your application form, you will receive an email with a link to forward to your THREE referees. This link will allow them to submit their letters of recommendation in support of your application. Letters should be in English submitted by the deadline indicated. Applications which are incomplete (e.g. missing reference letters) as of the closing date for a given meeting will not be considered.

What We Offer

  • Financial conditions: Fellows stipends are calculated individually - stipends are competitive and tax-free.
  • Leave: Fellows are entitled to 2.5 days paid leave per month.
  • Insurance: Fellows are covered by CERN's comprehensive health scheme for themselves and their dependents.
  • Travel expenses: Fellows are entitled to travel expenses for themselves and their family (unless stipulated otherwise on their contract).

Selection Procedure
