The United Nations Department of Field Support, Information and communications Technology Division (UN DFS-ICTD) is responsible for the delivery of applications that satisfy the requirements of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions as well as Special Political Missions (SPMs). Field Technology Service (FTS) in the United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) infrastructure, systems and software applications in support of operational requirements of peacekeeping missions as well as special political missions.

The Technology Development, Design and Planning Section (TDDPS) under the FTS umbrella is responsible for the development of projects and services that satisfy the requirements of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions. DFS has implemented a range of systems to address the principal requirements of peacekeeping operations and to support and enhance the processes DFS undertakes.  Technology Development Unit is a central pillar of the TDDPS section and acts a centre of excellence for idea generation, transformation of ideas into products/solutions or enhancing existing solutions that address problems facing Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO/DFS) missions through the use of Information Communication Technology ICT.

The incumbent will be part of a team of professionals that have combined decade’s long experience in the UN field missions.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the UNOPS Senior Programme Manager, the incumbent works under the direct guidance of the Information Systems Coordinator and Chief, Technology Development, Design and Planning (TDDPS) at UNFICT and is responsible for following duties.

  • Provide logistical and administrative support, make arrangements for meetings, maintain and update files/records on behalf of the TDDPS Section Chief.
  • Liaise with TDDPS partners, contractors, vendors and possible research centres and universities (locally and globally) as required;
  • Draft routine administrative and technical correspondence, reports and other documents;
  • Research and compile background materials for reports, briefings, and other.
  • Maintain and update the Project Information Management System and reporting tools;
  • Monitor status of project proposals and receipt of relevant project documentation for review and approval;
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of project proposals, budget implementations, and expenditures;
  • Assist with the coordination of events promoting projects to field missions;
  • Compile, summarize and present basic information/data on specific programmes/project and related issues;
  • Ensure effective coordination within different offices of the FTS and field missions in order to maximize possibilities of collaboration related to the project and its implementation;
  • Coordinate extensively with Service Units and Project Managers throughout project life cycles;
  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of internal and external communication materials;
  • Perform other duties as required

Education/Experience/Language requirements

a. Education 

High school diploma or equivalent is required. A Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, information Systems, Business Administration or any related fields is an asset or advantage. 

b. Work Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in an international/ multicultural organization in the field of ICT, budget and finance, administration, human resources, or other related fields is required.
  • Experience in writing of various communications materials and related documents is desirable.
c. Language
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage. 
d. Other
  • Knowledge of the Department of Field Support, UN systems, applications and Staff Regulations and Financial Rules is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and MS Project are desirable.
  • Certification and/or training in Project Management PRINCE2 (Foundation) or Project  Management Professional (PMP) is desirable ;
