The UNICEF Internship Programme offers qualified and eligible students at both Headquarters (HQ) and Country Offices (CO) the unique opportunity to acquire direct practical experience in UNICEF's work and the United Nations system under the direct supervision of experienced UNICEF staff.

To be considered for an internship with UNICEF, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme; and
• Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF's working languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin or Arabic. Additional language requirements may apply;  and
• Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records

Purpose of the internship: Support the work of Access to Justice and Gender-Based Violence in Somalia Country Office

TITLE: Intern, Justice and Gender-Based Violence

LOCATION: UNICEF Somalia Support Center (USSC), Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya

PURPOSE: The purpose of the internship is to provide young people, students or graduates, to have concrete experience with the child protection sector, as led by UNICEF Somalia Country Office.

Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Child Protection, and the direct supervision of Child Protection Specialist, Gender-Based Violence, with the intern will:

• Identify and analyse the provisions of Somali Laws that enable or prevent effective access to justice for children and women survivors of Gender-Based Violence;
• Analyse and summarize recommendations of Third Party Monitor (TPM) reports on UNICEF interventions implemented by GBV partners;
• Carry out an inventory of Children Acts in East Africa and Northern Africa, in support of the planned development of the Childrens Act by the Federal Government of Somalia;
• Undertake a reading of the draft Somaliland Children Act and identify areas of concerns vis-à-vis the provision of the Rights of the Child (CRC);
• Carry out any other tasks as assigned by the Child Protection Chief or Specialists.

Qualifications:  

Candidates for the Internship Programme must meet the following eligibility criteria;

• Currently Enrolled students in a recognized University for an undergraduate Degree programme in law / international relations/political sciences;
• Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible;
• Demonstrated interest in the field of child rights/Justice and gender issues.
• Written and spoken proficiency in English
