Organizational Setting

 

The Department of Management (MT) provides a ‘platform of services’ that serves as a foundation for the successful delivery of the IAEA’s scientific and technical programmes. Its mission statement is as follows\: “MT is a partner and a business enabler that champions change and efficiency, leveraging a common purpose”. Thus, among other support activities, it assists a scientific manager in recruiting the right expert, helps a technical officer coordinate the purchase of radiation equipment, and ensures that all Board documents are translated and distributed on a timely basis to Member States.

The Division of Human Resources plans, acquires and manages human resources to help implement IAEA programmes. The Division delivers the full spectrum of HR services, including organizational development and planning, talent acquisition and development, performance management, and administration of compensation and benefits. The Division serves a multicultural workforce of approximately 2300 people from diverse scientific, technical, managerial and professional disciplines.

The VIC (Vienna International Centre) Medical Service serves the staff of all VIC Based Organizations (i.e. the IAEA, the United Nations Office of Vienna, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization), promotes the health of the staff of these organizations, provides for an occupationally safe and healthy work environment, and ensures that the UN Common System medical standards are maintained at the VIC. It renders services to approximately 4500 staff and dependants.


Main Purpose

 

Under the supervision of a Head Nurse, the incumbent provides nursing services to VIC staff and other clients within the framework of the terms of reference for the VIC Medical Service to maintain a healthy work force and prevent disease. The Nurse provides first aid and handles life-threatening emergencies, delivers medical advice to travelling staff and administers vaccinations, refers patients to medical specialists and follows up on their health status, organizes health campaigns and administers the ergonomics programme.


Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care in medical emergencies on the VIC premises; coordinate actions with the medical staff of the VIC Medical Service, VIC Security and Safety staff and emergency health care professionals of the City of Vienna.
  • Assess and take care of medical and psychosocial problems of VIC staff and visitors in the walk-in clinics; decide on referrals to Medical Officers or medical authorities; carefully document patients' health status; prescribe medication not requiring prescriptions and issue sick leave certificates in compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Keep abreast of treating facilities, institutions and hospitals in Vienna. Follow up with patients for feedback and referral purposes; assess the potential of new treatment options outside the VIC.
  • Perform ECGs, venipuncture, assist in taking blood samples and assume related administrative duties; maintain medical equipment, medication and medical kits.
  • Train on-call staff in nursing care, practices and quality assurance standard operating procedures.
  • Provide travel advice and health education to staff on how to remain in good health. Plan/carry out vaccinations and implement malaria prophylaxis, taking the individual's health status and other considerations into account. Maintain travel-health materials and website links up to date.
  • Design, implement, facilitate and promote (as applicable) various health promotion campaigns (stop smoking classes, diet classes, etc.) by contributing to the development of handouts and health promotion material, and providing health care services to staff during campaigns.
  • Conduct ergonomic visits for staff in the VIC and Seibersdorf. Carefully plan the visits, document findings and follow them up.
  • Keep abreast of the latest medical developments/treatments, with particular emphasis on emergencies and first aid.
  • Maintain records of medical activities and patients' data for information and statistical purposes. Actively contribute to the enhancement of Earthmed (Electronic Health Record System) and make suggestions for improvement.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Three to four years of specialized nursing training leading to the official qualification of "Registered Nurse".
  • A minimum of six years of broad general nursing experience in several fields. International experience an advantage.
  • Advanced nursing education or equivalent experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable\: occupational health nursing, public health nursing, tropical medicine, as well as competence in emergency care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and advance cardiac life support. Certified skills in advanced life support.
  • Good knowledge of external medical facilities, as well as familiarity with health insurance matters.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English and German. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
  • English language test (level 2) and typing test (Level 2) to IAEA standard.

Remuneration

 

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 51704 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report. Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only.
