CARE South Sudan is seeking an experienced professional with expertise in agribusiness development to be responsible for the capacity building support to implement the business model that focusses on strengthening value chain entrepreneurs and farmer groups to improve their performance, make sustainable contribution to the economy of South Sudan and improve the functioning of agriculture value chains that will contribute to a structural reduction in food and income insecurity. The function holder reports to the Agribusiness Programme Manager.

The Agribusiness Advisor will utilize local Business Service Providers (BSPs) to assist with the growth and expansion of marketed products of agribusiness entrepreneurs. S/he will facilitate increased domestic marketing through more rigorous, post-harvest method and develop strong partnerships with financial institutions in order to ensure the success of the agribusiness enterprise.

The Agribusiness Advisor will be responsible providing technical support to farmer-led enterprises in terms of leveraging their capacities to become business enterprises. S/he will support farmer-led enterprises and their groups to improve business planning and in entrepreneurial skills. The role will ensure connections between farmer groups and other actors within the value chain and the financial sector are made, creating access to knowledge & finance. The Agribusiness Advisor will provide advice on business planning, financial management, governance and day-to-day management of agro-enterprises. It is hoped that through this way, investment flows will be realized in this sector.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic plans, and work plans for the consortium and support the programme with research on agribusiness constraints. Design appropriate strategies for addressing policy gaps
  • Provides training of extension providers, ensuring the integration of best production and post-harvest practices
  • Provide technical guidance to program staff and consortium partners, ensuring that the programme’s technical approach, methodologies, and activities are technically sound, feasible and contribute to the success of the programme; Develops strategic plan and work plans for the consortium
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with CARE staff, national and local authorities, international and national organizations as well as technical focal points in food security and agribusiness,
  • Coordinate all planned activities with the Food Security and Livelihoods Coordinators, and donors and other development agencies to ensure consistency with cluster priorities
  • Engage Government policy-makers to interface with producer and farmer enterprises to deliberate on policy improvement

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field from an internationally recognized University; Master’s degree preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience working on international development programmes to improve production and incomes through agribusiness model
  • Demonstrated experience of successfully linking agribusinesses to markets
  • Demonstrated experience in building the capacity of staff
  • Familiarity with M4P approach and its application in fragile environments
  • Experience is linking farmer groups with the private sector
  • Must possess a strong understanding of group development processes and facilitation skills, including developing and delivering training and group consensus building
  • Familiar with results chains and monitoring and evaluation frameworks
  • Proficiency in English is required
