Organizational Setting

The Division of Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Waste Technology comprises the Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials Section, Waste Technology Section and the Research Reactor Section. The Division is responsible for the implementation of activities under a matrix structure of programmes on the nuclear fuel cycle and materials technologies, on the management of radioactive waste and on research reactors sustainable operation.The Waste Technology Section assists Member States with waste management and decommissioning. It covers a broad spectrum of activities and is organized into teams responsible for radioactive waste management (pre-disposal and disposal), decommissioning of installations, environmental remediation of contaminated sites and management of disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS). Efforts are focused mainly on the elaboration and implementation of comprehensive and integrated radioactive waste management (RWM) strategies, the development of RWM infrastructure, the promotion of good practices for sustainable, safe and cost-effective RWM and the provision of direct assistance through the technical cooperation programme and nuclear security programme.


Main Purpose

As a member of a team under the guidance of the Predisposal Team Leader, the Radioactive Waste Management Specialist leads project activities focused on waste management practices in the areas of characterization, pre-treatment, treatment, conditioning and storage of radioactive waste (collectively termed "predisposal"). As a member of the Predisposal team, the Radioactive Waste Management Specialist leads project activities, develops and implements new projects, assists Member States to enhance their waste predisposal operations, and provides technical assistance at the request of Member States.


Role

The Radioactive Waste Management Specialist works as (i) a programme developer and implementer, contributing specialized knowledge and experience to the planning and delivery of the IAEA's programme in the areas of waste technology; (ii) a scientific secretary/technical expert, planning and leading technical meetings and workshops; (iii) a planner and leader of technical missions; and (iv) a technical officer of related technical cooperation projects; (v) developer and coordinator of professional networks, eLearning material and predisposal group knowledge; and (vi) promoter, organizer and evaluator of coordinated research projects.


Functions / Key Results Expected

• Provide specialized technical advice to stakeholders in the planning and implementation of the IAEA’s radioactive waste management activities;
• Contribute technical expertise in the area of predisposal management of radioactive waste and in this capacity advise and support Member States in the development and implementation of safe and sustainable predisposal practices and activities, maintaining consideration of innovative techniques;
• Initiate, plan and lead moderately complex consultancy and technical meetings, workshops and training courses in the area of predisposal management of radioactive waste;
• Develop and co-ordinate the preparation and delivery of reports and documents;
• Serve as Technical Officer for technical cooperation projects in the predisposal area; evaluate proposals, plan and implement activities; prepare and progress contracts for the procurement of goods and services; and monitor progress and evaluate results achieved from a technical perspective;
• Build strategic partnerships and facilitate international cooperation and coordinate/liaise with external institutions and stakeholders; gather, maintain and apply knowledge of international good practices and future trends in the management of radioactive waste;
• Establish, develop and maintain professional networks to promote the sharing of experience and transfer of knowledge in the field of predisposal management or radioactive waste, whilst promoting suitable innovations in such engagements.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

• Master's Degree - Advanced degree (or equivalent) in nuclear engineering or in a related technical or scientific discipline.

• Master's Degree - Advanced university degree in nuclear or chemical engineering or a related science (chemistry, environmental sciences) or technical discipline.

• PhD in a relevant discipline would be an asset.
• Minimum of seven years of proven and relevant operational experience in predisposal radioactive waste management activities.
• Good overall knowledge of all aspects of the full life-cycle of radioactive waste management
• Experience of participating in activities or meetings at an international level and awareness of international radioactive waste management programmes.
• Knowledge of Spanish and/or Russian would be preferred.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $70647 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 32498, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks' annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
