Background

Under the supervision of the Digital Communications Officer, the Social Media Intern will assist UNDP's global social media team to advocate UNDP's development brand through storytelling by:

  1. Writing content
  2. Taking part in the creative process to develop global campaign strategies
  3. Assisting in the project management process of rolling out global campaigns and measuring campaign impact
  4. The intern will be expected to assist with light design and production of multi-media graphics and will learn the start-to-finish process of digital marketing and not-for-profit storytelling for a digital/social audience

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Digital Communications Officer, the intern will specifically be required to:

  1. Assist in data extraction and compilation of marketing analysis reports of UNDP’s social media accounts, undp.org site, and blog (Exposure and Medium) (30%)
  2. Research data and key findings from latest UN reports and maintain the latest list of vetted UN data and use these to develop digital products for global campaigns (20%)
  3. Draft and schedule content for UNDP’s social media channels s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and  Linkedin. (15%)
  4. Monitor the UNDP website, regional and country office sites, multimedia blog platforms = )Exposure, Medium), Flickr sites and YouTube accounts for new content (10%)
  5. Community management and engagement with UNDP's audience on Facebook. Monitor & report risks to supervisor (5%)
  6. Update Twitter lists of influencers, Flickr lists and other relevant lists and  assist in the creation of editorial workplan calendars, and marketing research (15%)
  7. Assistance with live coverage at global events which will take place in New York where UNDP Social media provides real time digital media coverage (Live tweet/Facebook Live, etc.) (5%)
  8. Accompany UNDP’s social team members and/or supervisor to meetings

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Must be enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor or in a Masters degree programme. Journalism, communications or marketing majors are preferred.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Experience creating content and managing different social media channels

  • Basic design skills and creative flair

  • A passion for digital communications and social media

  • An interest in development issues

  • A strong commitment to using the power of storytelling to show positive change and transparency.

CONDITIONS:

  • This is an unpaid internship; all expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern.

  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship; The Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;

  • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of their internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;

  • The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from New York City (where the internship is based.)
