Translator (English to Japanese)

a.    Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the PCT Translation Division in the PCT Services Department of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).  In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.

 

b.    Purpose Statement

 

As part of the Asian Languages Section, the incumbent is required to translate and self-revise specialized scientific and technical texts from English into Japanese. The incumbent will also serve as a Project Manager within the Asian Languages Section for ad hoc translation requests for texts of a general and legal nature relating to intellectual Property and for localization requests for the Organization's products and webpages into Japanese, Korean and Chinese. The incumbent is required to provide the translation into Japanese of these ad hoc translation and localization requests. The incumbent is also required to train translation fellows in localization, compile terminology and create style-guides, assist with translation queries, assess the quality of translations and be familiar with a wide variety of translation and terminology-related technology.

 

c.    Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Asian Languages Section.

 

 

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.   Translate and self-revise texts in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects, as well as in a wide range of IP-related subjects from English into Japanese, meeting the standards of quality, quantity and timeliness of the Division.

 

b.   Translate and localize into Japanese the Organization’s products, such as web pages and online products, including testing the usability of the Japanese translations.

 

c.   Manage the ad hoc translation requests received by the Asian Languages Section, select and manage the appropriate resources and ensure timely delivery.

 

d.   Create and maintain style guides and translation memories for into Japanese translation for the Organization.

 

e.   Train translation fellows in the translation/localization of English into Japanese.

 

f.    Provide assistance to internal translators in response to linguistic queries concerning translation.

 

g.   Upon request, assess the quality of translations by applying established quality control standards to the work, seeking guidance when required.

 

h.   Use computer-assisted translation, terminology and machine translation tools and perform the post-editing of machine translations for data collection, providing feedback on request.

 

i.    Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

Education

Essential

First level university degree or equivalent in modern languages, linguistics, in a scientific or technical field, or in a related field.

 

Desirable

Advanced university degree in translation, a scientific or technical field, or in a related field.

 

Experience

Essential

With a first level university degree, six years of relevant professional experience, mainly in the translation and self-revision of technical and scientific texts, localization, or IP-related translation from English into Japanese is required. With a one-year advanced university degree in translation, five years, and for a two-year advanced university degree in translation, four years of relevant professional experience are required.

 

Language

Essential

Mother tongue level of Japanese and an excellent level of English.

 

Desirable

Knowledge of other PCT publication languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish).

Mobility\:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization.  Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the January 2018 rate of 74.0%

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
