Background Information - Afghanistan

With more than 20 years of experience in the country, the UNOPS Afghanistan office supports national reconstruction and development efforts by providing projects with goods and services - from stand-alone, one-off solutions to long-term management and capacity development support.  Based in Kabul, UNOPS Afghanistan has regional offices in most parts of the country. The team implements projects in support of the Afghanistan National Development Strategy, in a wide range of sectors including infrastructure, education, environment and agriculture, and governance and rule of law.

Background Information - Job-specific

We are currently looking for Afghan nationals with a strong sense of professional and social commitment to join our Rural Access Improvement Project - Phase 4 (RAIP IV) team as Interns.  In the Project context, Interns will participate in and contribute to our work with our Afghan project partners such as the Public Works Departments (PWDs) and Rehabilitation & Rural Development Departments at Balkh, Samangan, Jawzjan and Sari Pul provinces, and/or in the Ministry of Rehabilitation & Rural Development (MRRD) in Kabul.  The role of Interns will primarily be to support the Project interactions, communications and coordination between the PWDs / RRDDs / MRRD/ MPW and the RAIP IV team, in activities such as (but not limited to) the following.

Functional Responsibilities

    • Collection of field level data for roads inventory and condition monitoring / updating at provincial level
    • The carrying-out of road surveys and cost-estimation of works
    • Preparation of Project-related reports and presentations for PWD/RRDD staff and/or the RAIP IV team
    • Developing and providing data and information for Project status / progress reporting purposes
    • Participation in relevant ‘day to day’ PWD/RRDD / MRRD technical or operational activities ‘as required’, including operational / work travel under PWD/RRDD auspices to remote areas
    • Provision of periodic feedback to RAIP IV on the Internship status, arrangements and results.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education and Qualifications

  • Applicants must be (or have been) completing a degree in civil engineering within no more than the last 3 years (before application) from University of Jawzjan and Balkh or other comparable universities in one of the Project provinces
  • Preferred ‘major area/fields’ of such degree studies are roads design, construction and/or maintenance
  • Proficiency in contemporary computer applications is required, including sound knowledge of Microsoft Office tools / applications

Experience:

  • Previous participation in RAIP Phase capacity building / training programs is highly desirable
  • Previous professional experience in roads engineering, construction and maintenance is also desirable 

Language requirement

  • Fluency - both written and oral - in Dari and/or Pashtu is essential
  • Knowledge of English language will be an asset

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
