The intern will provide direct programmatic and administrative support to the Knowledge Leadership and Partnerships team in the HIV/AIDS Section to develop content for and regularly update internal and external communication and knowledge management platforms, to support coordination of major events during a period of intense activity, to conduct literature reviews to inform the development of key knowledge products, to assist in the development of templates to be used to gather programmatic, political, research and/or data elements from country and partner organizations and to provide  other programmatic and administrative support as needed.

  1. Background:

The fight against HIV/AIDS is not yet over, despite remarkable progress over the past decade. UNICEF’s HIV/AIDS programming addresses HIV prevention, treatment and care for infants, children, adolescents and mothers. To reach an AIDS-free generation, UNICEF focuses on the unfinished business in supporting countries to prevent new infections among children, women and adolescents, to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and to bring and retain mothers, children and adolescents living with HIV in lifelong care. 

  1. Purpose:

The intern will provide direct programmatic and administrative support to the Knowledge Leadership and Partnerships team in the HIV/AIDS Section to develop content for and regularly update internal and external communication and knowledge management platforms, to support coordination of major events during a period of intense activity, to conduct literature reviews to inform the development of key knowledge products, to assist in the development of templates to be used to gather programmatic, political, research and/or data elements from country and partner organizations and to provide  other programmatic and administrative support as needed. 

The intern will gain exposure to increase their knowledge of the global HIV and AIDS agenda including the use of data for programming and advocacy, the elimination of mother to child transmission, paediatric and adolescent HIV prevention and the integration of services within other programmatic areas including maternal, newborn and child health issues, interact with key partners in these arenas and apply and improve their writing and organizational skills.

  • This internship will provide the chance to test out potential career choices in the area of communications and knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation and international public health, by gaining real-life experience in a culturally diverse international organization

Overall Objective:

Assist in overall internal and external communication and knowledge sharing.

Specific Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Write and post content on a weekly basis for the intranet, Children and AIDS website, including blog posts, resources, and event updates.  
  • Assist in writing and editing key publications as needed
  • Contribute to special projects and research on EMTCT, Paediatric and Adolescent HIV and integration of services within MNCH, conduct literature reviews and tool/template development, as needed

  • Intranet and external website updated on weekly basis, including development and writing of technical content
  • Generation of quarterly newsletters
  • Editing and assist in writing of at least 2 publications/reports/presentations
  • Literature reviews conducted as needed
  • Development of tool/templates for gathering information across country and partner organizations

Minimal Qualifications:

The incumbent must:

  • Be enrolled in a programme at the Masters level, preferably in Library Science, Public Health, Public Policy and Management, Health Communications or Business Administration.
  • Knowledge of web content management systems
  • Strong writing and organizational skills
  • Fluency in English and another UN language preferred. Knowledge of one other UN working language an advantage.
