The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. APHRC seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Fellow to work within its Aging and Development Unit (ADU).

Major Responsibilities

  1. Support the unit lead in the development of strategies and plans for growing ADU’s research portfolio and deepening its policy relevance
  2. Provide oversight to the implementation of, and lead on the analysis, interpretation and reporting of data collected through the SAGE-INDEPTH wave 2 survey
  3. Co-lead on further analysis, interpretation and reporting of data on long-term care provision and receipt in two urban slums in Nairobi
  4. Develop reactive or speculative funding proposals – based on secondary analysis of existing survey data sets as well as primary research – to expand the Unit’s portfolio of research on better understanding (i) the relevance of older populations to the achievement of a demographic dividend in SSA countries (ii) age-based and within older population inequalities in health and well-being and (iii) realities of long-term care in SSA

Qualifications and experience

  1. PhD in Social Gerontology, or related fields. Typically a postdoctoral fellowship should be taken up within two years of completion of doctoral degree
  2. Strong writing skills and good record of publications on relevant subject areas
  3. Strong quantitative research and statistical skills
  4. Experience of secondary data analysis and primary empirical research on issues of aging, older persons and health in sub-Saharan African settings
  5. High levels of familiarity with a diverse set of health and social science data sets
  6. Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants

Desirable: Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team
