Under the direct supervision of the Senior Research Scientist and the overall supervision of the Head, Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics (CMSP) section, the incumbent is expected to actively take part in all activities of the CMSP section and in particular to collaborate proactively in widening the scope of ICTP's renewable energy initiative. The incumbent will initiate and undertake world-class research in the field of theory of materials for sustainable energy within the Renewable Energy Initiative. In particular, s/he will\:
  • Undertake front-line research in the fields of atomistic materials science for sustainable energy. This includes studies of new battery materials, photo-electrochemical processes at oxide surfaces, photovoltaic energy conversion, and production and storage of fuels. Carry out numerical simulations based on density-functional theory in the framework of ICTP's activities in High Performance Computing.
  • Organize seminars, courses, workshops, conferences and topical meetings, and select participants.
  • Review the applications for postdoctoral work and Associateships, Diploma Courses, and short and long-term visits.
  • Teach, as required, in Diploma Course Programs and the Masters courses in High Performance Computing. Collaborate, as appropriate, with the Associates as well as other visitors to the Centre, especially those from developing countries.
  • Teach courses and give lectures in developing countries, identify and support promising students and guide scientific projects undertaken by students and young researchers in developing countries. Organize scientific meetings, workshops and conferences to be held in developing countries.

Education
  • Advanced University degree (PhD or equivalent) in Physics or related areas.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant scientific research experience of which preferably 1 year acquired at international level
  • Documented record of excellence in research.
Skills/Competencies
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on complex technical and scientific issues.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
Languages
  • Excellent knowledge of English.

Work Experience
  • Demonstrated experience in the teaching and/or mentoring of undergraduate or postgraduate students from developing countries.
  • Experience in teaching in developing countries and coordinating joint research projects with scientists based in developing countries.
