Anthropologist (M/F) - Philippines

For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organisation committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations. MdM currently works in 44 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction associated with drug use, emergencies and crisis.

MdM has been working in the Philippines since 2012, through a project of health and environmental risk reduction related to e-waste informal dismantling activities, in 4 urban poor communities of Metro Manila.
A new pilot project will start in January 2018 to improving the health situation of people in urban settings though a community based / holistic approach. A first phase will be implemented for 12 months, to better understand the dynamics inside the community, the socio-cultural determinants and the network of stakeholders. MDM aim at accompanying social changes in one Manila slum by empowering the population for taking power on their environment having a direct impact on health.

As an anthropologist you will be in charge to organize, implement, follow-up and analyse an anthropological diagnosis on social and community dynamics around environmental health in Barangay 775, Manila.

The general objective is to provide elements to fuel project development aiming at empowering communities in mitigating environmental risks for a better health.

The purpose of a community diagnosis is to allow identification of a social fabric, of a “potential” – that is, the existing resources within the “communities” – and to evaluate this local dynamic, upon which the team can base its work
The diagnosis should focus on understanding population perceptions and identifying opportunities for change that exist within the groups and can be taken advantage of.
This mission will consist of an inventory/mapping of community perceptions around environmental health and existing opportunities within local population to further work on those aspects with communities being the centre of the dynamic.

More in details you:

• Provide a better understanding on population perceptions on water, pollution, waste, health and nutrition
• Provide a better understanding on population’s understanding on links between health and ‘environmental precarious situation’ and how the priorities of needs are done
• Document population perceived/expressed stress factors and vulnerabilities and ‘power’
• Identify population feeling/perception and opportunities around their ‘living space/the barangay.
• Identify key boosters and barriers for community involvement and differences between networks in terms of efficiency (networks such as family, religious, neighbours, etc)
• Identify potential political dynamics, conflict and power dynamics within the community
• Identify tools enabling access to adapted information.
• Identify areas they feel need improvement (generally speaking) and daily priorities
• Identify their willingness and ability to participate in an empowerment program, and their availability if they would feel interested

Activities

• Review the literature on the subject
• Read the health assessment report and environmental reports and use results to orientate the anthropological study
• Develop the Community empowerment approach study protocol, budget, and timeline including the participatory activities, training, qualitative data collection, data analysis, report writing and presentation of the results
• Participate to working session to process health/environment/anthropo studies results and produce project framework

Reporting

• Write a mission report containing all findings before the end of the contract
• Participate to reports and proposals writing for potential donors

2778 gross monthly salary on 13 months

PROFIL RECHERCHE :

Education
Master degree in Sociology or Anthropology and/or related to social sciences
Professional Experience
Strong experience in socio-anthropological approach to health
Experience in public health
Extensive experience in community health diagnosis
Experience of conducting qualitative research in Philippines would be an asset
Required Skills
Very good knowledge of qualitative survey methodology and practical experience in implementing community empowerment, social-cultural surveys
Respectful of local culture and willingness to learn from the Philippines team & partner
Ability to work closely with communities and on community empowerment
Languages
Fluent English, knowledge of French and/or Tagalog an advantage
