OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objective of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) is to foster an effective global research effort on infectious diseases of poverty in which disease endemic countries play a pivotal role. The immediate strategic objectives of the unit are to promote access to tools and interventions to control or eliminate poverty-related infectious diseases, and to empower low- and middle-income countries to conduct the relevant operational and implementation research.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. To provide technical, scientific and project management support to the Leader of the IIR unit.

2. To provide specialist support tothe current activities of the Structured Operational Research & Training Initiative (SORT IT) and the transition towards the Structured Approach to Precision in Public Health through Improved Research and use of Evidence (SAPPHIRE) Initiative.

3. To provide crucial support to the management of additional projects as needed.

4. To interact with and report to the IIR Scientific Working Group on the above-mentioned activities, as required.

5. To communicate effectively on these activities and contribute to other TDR projects and activities as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: Advanced level degree in medicine\: MD and/or PhD level.
Desirable\: Post-graduate degree related to operation/implementation research.

Experience

Essential\: At least 7 years' experience combined at national and international level in grant management, operation/implementation research in tropical medicine/infectious diseases. Demonstrated experience of training and capacity building programmes in LMICs.
Desirable\: Relevant publication track record. Experience with working with WHO. Successful fund-raising. Experience working with public health programmes in disease-endemic countries.

Skills

Good knowledge of poverty-related infectious diseases. Ability to work in a team, and collaborate with other experts and colleagues. Good communication skills and ability to effectively interact with partners.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 70,647 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 4910 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
