OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To support high-burden countries to ensure evidence-based policies and strategies are in place to achieve universal access to high quality health services for maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (MNCAH), and increase coverage and quality of effective MNCAH interventions among pregnant women, newborns, children and adolescents, and to create mechanisms to measure the impact of those strategies.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

- To manage and provide technical support to research projects on newborn health supported by MCA, including monitoring and supporting quality of research implementation.

- To provide substantial contribution to the development of guidelines and other tools for the improved prevention and management of newborn health problems by member states.

- To provide technical support to countries for improving hospital-based care for reduction of neonatal mortality.

- To provide expertise and support to SEAR colleagues in improving research capacity in the Region, and developing research projects on Regional priorities.

 

Main achievements include\: Research projects in SEA Region supported by MCA Department implemented with high quality and research findings disseminated. Development or revision of existing guidelines to translate evidence into improved delivery of interventions for newborn health and survival. Strengthened research capacity within the SEA Region.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential\: Medical Degree with Specialization in Paediatrics from a recognized university.
Desirable\: PhD or equivalent degree related to newborn health.

Experience

Essential\: At least seven years' experience working in research on newborn health and providing clinical newborn health care in developing countries. Experience in conducting research, as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Desirable\: Conducting and publishing systematic reviews. Involvement with development of guidelines.

Skills

Extensive knowledge on newborn health issues, including epidemiology, health facility and community-based interventions. Ability to identify priority issues for improving newborn health and survival, in particular in the context of the delivery of effective interventions at the facility and community level. Ability to conduct systematic reviews and to assess the quality of the evidence summarized. Ability to develop guidelines following the GRC process and to write clear reports and papers on research findings for dissemination. Ability to cooperate effectively with research teams in the context of monitoring and supporting study implementation.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 70,647 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 1766 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
