International Potato Center POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Experimental Station Supervisor The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a highly competent Experimental Station Supervisor for its facility (called CCCAP) in Yanqing district, Beijing, China.

The Center: CIP is a not-for-profit international agricultural research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweet potato, and Andean roots and tubers. CIP is dedicated to achieving food security, improved well-being, and gender equity for poor people in root and tuber farming and food systems of the developing world. CIP works with partners to contribute high quality science, technology, and capacity strengthening for sustainable science-based solutions. CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with staff and activities in over 30 locations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP is a member of the CGIAR consortium. CGIAR coordinates the work of 15 research centers, and their hundreds of partner organizations. CIP is in the process of opening a sizeable R&D facility in Beijing (Yanqing District) called the CIP-China Center for Asia-Pacific (CCCAP). CCCAP is planning to start hiring scientists and staff. The aim of CCCAP is to accelerate poverty reduction and improve food security through research and capacity strengthening.

The position: This position will be based in Yanqing District, Beijing, China. The position will report to the Chief Scientist CCCAP. The successful candidate will plan, direct and monitor field and greenhouse activities at the Experimental Station as well as in other stations within China that may host CCCAP field work, in order that the expected results can be obtained.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the use, administration, budget, operations and financial results of our own experimental station (research field, greenhouses, warehouse), according to our scientific priorities.
  • Become key stakeholder of all scientific initiatives by leading the field work. Ensure proper execution and data collection and registration (phenotyping) of field experiments.
  • Together with researchers, identify new field experimental sites to conduct CCCAP’s field research. Lead all communication efforts with external organizations that may be conducting field research in our behalf. Supervise their work to ensure proper field results.
  • Comply with applicable labor, environmental, industrial (if applicable), and health and safety regulations from local, national and international laws, policies and regulations as well as comply with all CIP and CCCAP internal policies and procedures.
  • Manage routine personnel problems and manage the proper use of all assets
  • Keep updated and be responsible for all maintenance issues, calibrations, repairs, improvement, and construction of any material, equipment, space and infrastructure at the Yanqing site to ensure it will work properly.
  • Keep updated with all training and certifications required for the optimal management and performance of the station, field, and greenhouses including maintenance, pesticide certifications, water quality, environmental, fertilizer, organic farming and any other relevant certification.

Selection Criteria:

  • Master degree in Agricultural Production, Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology or related Agriculture Sciences specialization. PhD is a plus and also accepted in this position;
  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience in similar positions;
  • Relevant experience managing agricultural infrastructure, field equipment and people;
  • Knowledge of the latest technologies applicable to field and greenhouse agriculture.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Must be highly organized, solutions-oriented, detail-oriented and adept at managing multiple complex projects simultaneously;
  • Ability to effectively work as the leader of the team;
  • Excellent spoken and written English and Mandarin.
