Background

UNDP promotes sustainable human development to strengthen the resilience of nations and to empower people to build better lives. Regarded as the UN's major development network, UNDP has drawn upon international experiences for over three decades to assist China in developing solutions to its own ongoing development challenges, as well as furthering China’s South-South cooperation and wider engagement in global development. 

In view of the rapidly changing contours of China's development requirements, UNDP China has continued to evolve and currently works in four main project areas: poverty, equity and governance; energy and the environment; disaster management; and South-South cooperation – an international platform facilitating development partnerships between China and other developing countries in the South.

The philanthropy portfolio aims to promote sustainable development in the philanthropic sector in China, through in depth research, innovative initiatives, policy advice and partnered projects. The main focuses are: “Philanthropy for SDGs in China”, “Philanthropy Policy in China” and “Innovative Philanthropy in China”.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the philanthropy consultant, the Intern will undertake the following tasks:

• Assist the national consultant in collecting information and updates in the international and domestic philanthropic sector; including but not limited to topics such as China Charity Law and philanthropy online platforms;

• Attend and provide administrative support to project/programme partner meetings, prepare speeches and concept notes, draft programme documents and meeting minutes and proofreading team documents;

• Conduct daily policy research and retrieving statistical data from internal and external sources on national and international development trends, and summarize key recent publications in related field;

• Support the implementation of programmes, communications and advocacy events; Compile information packs and assist in production of updated promotional materials;

• Provide logistical support to the team of publicity and outreach, knowledge sharing events, and promotional opportunities; 

• Assist the team in organizing the key forums and events; 

• Maintain information, knowledge products and partners’ database, photo library and website;

• Organize translations of key documents, toolkits and publications, where relevant 

• Any other emerging tasks as required.

Competencies

Required Skills and Experience

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, economics, international development, or social sciences; Current postgraduate student in public policy, governance, law, development, social sciences, or relevant discipline is welcome;

• Demonstrate integrity by modeling the UN values and ethical standards;

• Promote the vision, mission and strategic goals of UNDP;

• Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, sexual identity, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;

• Corporate and functional competencies; Able to work independently and efficiently;

• Proven analytical skills, data skills and research record in development field, especially in philanthropic sector;

• Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills in English and Mandarin; 

•Strong research, data analysis and visualization skills are preferred;

•Exposure to issues of China’s socio-economic and equitable development, especially in the philanthropic sector;

•Proficient skills in Microsoft office applications;

•Prior experiences in research or experiences with international organizations are preferred
