Position Background

Through the Government Relations Department, ICMP implements its mandate of assisting governments and state institutions in the Western Balkans to build rule-of-law institutions that successfully and impartially search for and identify missing persons in a manner that enables families of the missing to assert their rights. The Communications department is responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing ICMP’s overall communications strategy. The work of the Communications department includes producing internal and external communications material e.g., website, newsletter, annual report, press releases, media advisories and other publications as necessary. In addition, the office promotes the work of ICMP and raises awareness of the issue of the missing through contacts with the media, public relations/awareness campaigns maintaining a consistent ICMP style/cooperate image.

The selected Intern will gain insights into the issue of missing persons in the Western Balkans and other parts of the world, political and constitutional organisation of the countries in the region, other human-rights-related topics, as well as skills in research, reporting, conducting official correspondence, relations with media other stakeholders.

This is a three/four month unpaid internship. Actual hours per week can vary depending on availability of the selected intern.

Reporting directly to the Senior Program Officer, the Intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • CreateanewregionalstakeholdersdatabaseinpreparationforimplementationofICMP’snew regional project.
  • Review and categorise documentation pertaining to the recently completed project of the review of unidentified cases of human remains in Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • ConductresearchonthetopicofAlbanian-Greekrelationsregardingthetopicoffallenmissing soldiers.
  • Assist in drafting of weekly and monthly reports.
  • Media monitoring.
  • Assist with issues related to relationships with local, regional and international media.
  • Assist in organization of press conferences, visits and other events for media representatives.

  • University degree or close to completion in the areas of journalism, political science, human rights, law, international relations, anthropology or related field;
  • Analytical and research skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Strong record of academic performance:
  • Eager to learn and develop;
  • Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.

Additional requirements:

  • Professional fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Advance knowledge of written and spoken Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft applications, including Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Proven ability to interact positively with colleagues regardless of culture, nationality or gender.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

  • Working hours As agreed with their supervisors. Interns must provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances that prevent them from observing these working hours.
  • Visa and travel Interns are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. If required, ICMP may request the host state to assist a selected intern in obtaining visas. Costs and arrangements for travel, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern.
  • Insurance Interns are responsible for providing proof of valid medical insurance coverage prior to the start of the internship placement.
  • Conduct & Confidentiality Interns are required to sign and abide by the ICMP Code of Ethical Conduct. ICMP has the authority to remove any intern from a placement due to unsatisfactory performance or conduct.
