For every child,

Gambian children face major inequities. They live in a small, densely populated, low-income country with one of the fastest population growth rates in the world (3.3%). As of 2013, the  population was estimated to be 1.9 million, 42 per cent of which is under the age of 15 years. According to the 2015 Human Development Index, 57 per cent of the population is multi-dimensionally poor. The 2010 Integrated Household Survey found the rate of income poverty to be 48 per cent nationally, with huge disparities between urban and rural areas – 70 per cent of the rural population lives on less than $1.25 a day, compared to 32.7 per cent of the urban population.

In spite of these challenges, made substantial progress has been for children in immunization, which registers above 90 per cent coverage for all major antigens; basic education, which has a gross primary school enrolment ratio of 101 per cent for boys and girls; and water and sanitation where 90 per cent of the population uses an improved water source for drinking, and only 2 per cent practice open defecation. According to government statistics, the under-five mortality rate decreased from 109 to 54 per 1,000 live births between 2010 and 2013; a decline of 49 per cent. Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), and child and forced marriages, were recently banned spurring hopes for renewed efforts to end these harmful traditional practices which record high prevalence rates in the country.
