Background information - IPMG

UNOPS strategic focus places increased emphasis on national capacity development and sustainable approaches to project management, procurement and infrastructure services.  A key objective is to be recognized as an organization that delivers world-class infrastructure and project management, which is both economically and socially sustainable, even in the most challenging environments. To achieve this goal, UNOPS has established the Infrastructure and Project Management Group (IPMG).

Within UNOPS, IPMG’s objectives are to serve the organization’s personnel and partners by broadening their infrastructure and project management capabilities, while disseminating best-practices in both of these areas. Through this work, the group helps facilitate the successful delivery of programmes and projects around the world. To achieve its objectives, IPMG has established three interrelated and interdependent work streams, namely, Strategic Initiatives, Standards, and Conformance. IPMG is managed overall by the Director of IPMG and supported by a Programme Support Unit. Conformance includes the following units: Organizational Programme Management Office (OPMO), Maturity Assessment, Infrastructure Design Review and Engagement Acceptance.

Background Information - Job-specific

Under the overall guidance and supervision of IPMG Head of Conformance, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting a variety of tasks and work packages as a part of her/his internship period. We are seeking qualified applicants who may have a background in infrastructure and project management; and who are extremely client/service-oriented as well as structured, organized and detail-oriented.  The primary support areas will be in Communication, Data Analysis and Budget monitoring.

At the end of this internship, the successful candidate will have gained in:

  • Exposure to UNOPS project management and infrastructure corporate standards and activities;
  • Experience within the Infrastructure Design Review team;
  • Experience in one of the operational areas: Communication, budget/finance, administration, Data Analysis;
  • Exposure to international personnel;
  • Exposure to an operational arm of the United Nations strategy.

The internship is expected to start on March 1 for a duration of 6 months.

Functional Responsibilities

Infrastructure & Project Management Support:

  • Support a variety of tasks, work packages and projects as outlined and assigned in the annual work plan for the Conformance Workstream;
  • Responsible for meeting and setting goals, targets and performance standards; set out by supervisor;
  • Providing analysis and reporting as required; Research and information/data collection;
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, guidelines and instructions set out by the practice and organization;
  • Support in areas of IPMG Conformance as required;
  • Day to day tasks as assigned.

Communication, Reporting & Tools:

  • Willingness and ability to learn  infrastructure and project management tools; providing guidance and assistance as required;
  • Support the development of IPMG workspace with new case studies, client profiles, UNOPS best practices, and share with the organization;
  • As assigned; drafting of articles, presentations, e-mails and other communication on Infrastructure and Project Management practices and tools;
  • Assist with monitoring and reporting of performance.

Knowledge Management & Training Support:

  • Maintenance, update and support of all relevant guidance and documentation;
  • Review and update of knowledge articles as required as well as creation of knowledge articles;
  • Support all training initiatives within the practice as required, this includes but not limited to training set up, administrative support and logistics.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent is required.
  • To be eligible for this particular internship with UNOPS, the candidate must be studying towards a university degree in Civil Engineering, Business Administration, Project Management or other relevant discipline. Alternatively, the incumbent will have graduated with a relevant University degree within the past three years.

Language Skills

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French and/or Spanish would be considered an asset.

Internship-related experiences    

  • While no prior work experience is required, some experience in project management or Infrastructure, ideally within the development sector or private sector, is highly desirable.

Additional requirements

  • PRINCE2 Foundation certificate would be desirable.

Interns are responsible for arranging their own travel and securing any necessary visas. This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend of USD 900 per month  from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
