The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs

NRC is looking for a Livelihood and Food Security Coordinator for our area office in Maiduguri in Northern Nigeria. The purpose of the Livelihood and Food Security Coordinator is to lead in the implementation of Business Skills and Vocational Training component of the EU funded Livelihoods and Food Security Project in Borno State.

NRC initiated country operations in Nigeria in June 2015, in order to respond to the critical and increasing needs in the country. NRC currently has a full team based in Maiduguri and a coordination office in Abuja. NRC is currently providing services across various sectors namely; Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFI); Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH); Food Security; and Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA) in order to address identified humanitarian needs.

The Food Security Business Skills and Vocational Training Coordinator reports to the Food Security Project Manager.

Job description

  • Line management of officers and Assistants and other field staff
  • Contribute to Core Competency strategy development, project proposals and provide input on needs and gaps
  • Manage and implement the business skills and vocational training component of the EU funded project (activities, budget and project documentation) as delegated from Project Manager in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements, and ensure high technical quality
  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection are explore and asses new and better ways to assist
  • Undertake needs, vulnerability, post training and post distribution programme assessments to determine most viable income generating activities.
  • Responsible for coordination with all key stakeholders to ensure registration of project beneficiaries.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders and partners on training of beneficiaries on small scale business and income generating activities.
  • Assist the Project Manager in the planning and design of Income Generating activities, business grants delivery modalities and mechanisms

Qualifications

  • B. Sc. Economics, Agricultural Economics, Social Sciences
  • Experience from working on livelihoods and food security project implementation position from Borno context preferred
  • Solid understanding of Selection, Planning and Management (SPM) of Income Generating Activities (IGAs) both farm and off farm.
  • Demonstrated experience in livelihoods programming including income generating activities, (IGAs), VSLAs
  • Good understanding of IGA monitoring
  • Experience with multi sector approaches
  • Experience of implementing and distribution of small scale business startup grants
  • Work experience of implementation through/with remote access
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal
  • Able to speak fluent Kanuri and Hausa languages
  • Preferable knowledge of the following: EUTF, DEVCO procedures
  • Experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile

We offer

  • Commencement: April 2018
  • Duration: 12 months
  • Salary/benefits: According to NRC’s general directions.(Grade Level 7 Step 1)
  • Duty station: Maiduguri, with 70% travels to Local Government Areas. Travel outside Maiduguri is dependent on changing security conditions, especially for certain roads in the area.
